Grad. school GPA for second degree nursing (CO schools specifically)?

Hey all,

So.... since high school, I've been considering nursing. Long-story short, I ended up with a degree in psychology/math minor. Now, I just finished my graduate degree in public health, however I have not been able to find a job thus far (I've been applying since March). Four months is not a long time by any means, but I consider myself a planner and like to have back-up plans for my back-up plans. I find that in Colorado, I am either overqualified, lack experience, do not have the RN credential/degree, or a combination of it all. With that said, I want to do a second degree program (versus direct entry MSN) because public health nursing fits right in with my MPH.

My question is this: Do second degree programs (Regis, UCAN, UNCO, Metro, etc.) accept the graduate degree GPA? My undergraduate GPA was not bad (3.34), however I used to be in engineering before I switched and have a few D's/F's (for physics and dynamics - for most of them I have grade replacements, but for most applications they do not account for that). My MPH GPA is a 3.9, which is significantly better (especially since UNCO starts from 4.0 and goes down the list for acceptance, from what I read on here). Depending on the school, I have about 3-7 pre-reqs (UCAN - 3, Regis - 7), so overall pre-req GPA that is yet to be determined.

While I can't speak to whether or not they will accept the GPA, I do know that all the UC affiliated colleges do not accept grade replacements or grade forgiveness. All the grades are factored into the GPA.

I would think you are plenty competitive for a nursing program. I'm pretty sure you would be qualified for an accelerated BSN program. What you need is the RN, so the level won't matter much. Call a few schools and they will let you know. Good luck.

I also got my MPH before applying for nursing school. My GPA was 3.8. I can't speak for other schools, but I know CU look at you as a whole package, your rec letters, personal statement, GPA, etc. Good luck!

I graduated from Unco in december. Your best bet is to meet with liz Osborn the advisor to get more info. When I entered the program, they went off the last 45 credits you took. They also weighed certain courses more heavily, like your science courses (a&p, patho). She could help you figure out what your GPA would be specific to unc. When I went I did the 2nd degree program and I want to say the lowest GPA was 3.7 or so. It really just depends on the people applying.
