Grad Nurse Support Circle!

Am i the only grad nurse here on the boards? Is signing your name with an RN exhilarating? Is freaking out at the sight of a medication chart that doesn't get co-signed normal? How are people finding their grad years?

I'm doing a specific oncology grad program and Monday marks 6 months since i started. I'M LOVING IT! Everyone who works on my ward are incredibly friendly and even night shifts (which i'm currently on!) aren't that painful!

I've found the basics for a sucessful grad year

*debrief time with your nursing friends with a bottle of red

*a good team to work with

*a nightlight that slips over your ear

*cup-a-soup for those cold nights or times you don't have time for a meal

I have my interview with my first choice of hospital in a couple of weeks! I'm stressed over the interview and then the stress of the first year, what if I make a huge mistake, I feel like I've forgotten everything I've learned at uni already!

Try not to be nervous .............. :uhoh3:;) Yes, I know .........easier said than done. You are allowed to take notes with you into the interview.

Well, I can tell you .............. I had the same anxiety and doubted if I could make a good nurse etc etc. Nursing degree is only basic, nursing starts when you start working as a nurse and guess what? It's not as bad as you think and new grad programme are life savers, good transition.

I've heard from some students that the first question was - Why do you want to work here at this hospital?

Specializes in Jack of all trades, and still learning.

Would you believe we didn't have an interview? They told us they could gauge the information they needed from our clinical reports when we were on prac, our referees/references, and our covering letter. That's why I didn't give TinaSQstudent advice; because I had no idea what they were going to ask...

If you're going for interviews in the public hospitals, they seldom ask you "why do you want to work here". They have no need for that question and it seldom interests them. But if you go to private, they might ask you that as private is profit driven (usually).

Usually at the interview you will be asked a few case scenarios, much like the OSCARS but easier. You just got to make your answers logical and in accordance with AMNC policies and protocols.

There is no point in trying to get people to tell you the interview questions or trying to reheorifice anything. Just be natural. You should know all the answers to the interview questions anyway. The questions will NOT be anything over your head. This is NOT medicine. Medicine will ask you things which will floor you. In nursing, they ask you things you should know. If you can't answer their simple questions, you should really reconsider your preparation in becoming an RN!

Also, if you are in a "good" university and are taking subjects such as "transitions", they should well prepare you for the interviews, no matter how hard the interviews may be.

Cheers!

I thought I was the only new grad here! I'm just over the halfway point in my new grad program. Have just started a new rotation in Oncology/Haematology. Not loving it but willing to give it a chance cos i know this area will be quite interesting and i know i have a lot to learn.

I like being able to write "RN". Beats having to write out "Student Nurse" at the end of all my notes!!

hello other new grads!!
