GPN who failed and still working

:crying2: i know a graduate nurse who failed her boards the pn-nclex and she continues to work as a graduate nurse and she graduated over six (6) months ago, if the florida board of nursing was to find out would she be in trouble with being allowed to take her boards again. i am very concern because this girl has this attitude and she told me it was just a job for her and that she really doesn't take it serious, if that's the case i think i should report her because these are peoples lives your dealing with and she doesn't care that i know she's unlicensed someone please help me

Your employer should pull her if it has been over 6 months since she started her GPN status. That is the time frame you are allowed to work. Why are they allowing her to continue to work?

When did she gain her GPN status with the BON? That is different than her graduation date.

Specializes in Maternal - Child Health.

States that allow graduate nurses to work in a "license pending" status require the candidate to immediately notify the employer and stop practicing as a GN upon failing NCLEX. The temporary practice permit is null and void as soon as a candidate fails boards. This non-nurse is practicing in violation of state law.

I would definitely report her, huge liability issues.

We don't even have graduate nurses in the state of Indiana. Until you have your license in hand, you don't work as a nurse. A lot of new grads work as Tech's until they get their license, just to have an "in" with the facility when they start applying for nursing positions.

Is it possible HR is not aware? I have a difficult time thinking the facillity would knowingly go against the board. Perhaps there is not stop-gap in place for the facillity to know the exact time of a GPN license.

If I'm remembering correctly, once the board issues your "seating card", eligibility letter to sit for the NCLEX-PN, that is also your date that you may start working as a GPN in the state of FL. Her employer has a copy of that document.

Valid for 6 months from the date of that letter...or if you fail.
