GPA and Acceptance

Published

Hi there,

I'm applying to accelerated BSN programs and the more I read on this forum, the more I'm worried about acceptance. I'd like to keep the number of schools I apply to to a minimum for financial reasons, but I need to get in somewhere. If someone could give me an opinion on my stats, I'd really appreciate it. I have a low GPA 3.27, from the Univerisity of Notre Dame. I have a 4.0 in all my prerequisites and I have volunteered at a clinic for over a year. My choices in order of importance are Oregon Health and Science University, Linfield College in Oregon, Califorina State University-Northridge, San Francsico State University, and Samuel Merritt College. Does anyone have stats for acceptance into OHSU or Linfield? Will my GPA keep me out?

Thanks.

you look like a competitive candidate. try not to worry so much.

I got into an accelerated BSN program with a 3.32 GPA with a 4.0 on my prereqs. Each program is different, and while mine looked at the entire GPA picture, they put more emphasis on my prereq and science grades. Since you did so well on your prereqs and most programs look at the overall picture (such as interviews, previous experience, etc) I wouldn't worry too much. One suggestion that I can make is to become a CNA because it is a requirement for a growing number of accelerated programs and it will show the selection committee that you are serious about nursing and have the basic skills down already. Good luck!

+1 i was accepted to an accelerated bsn with an overall of 3.4 and prereq of 3.7 + 3 years emt experience and hospital volunteering.

I agree with the others, you seem like a strong candidate. I've been accepted to an ABSN w/GPA 3.5, pre-req's 4.0...and no health care experience at all. It's a pretty competitive program...almost 400 applied for about 85 spots. I would think you have a great shot...good luck!

I'm not sure about Linfield, but I know OHSU is really competitive. I cannot remember if they offer the ABSN in the other state locations, but the state avg GPA for 2008 for ABSN applicants was 3.8. I imagine for the Portland area it's much higher.

I live in Portland and am applying to OHSU's OCNE program this year. I'm a little nervous about my previous college grades, but my A&P and other classes I've taken since starting this new adventure is ~3.8.

Concordia (100% pass rate for 1st graduating class) and George Fox have new programs and although they are private schools, I'm sure you could research some financial aid. At least that will offer more options to all of us applying in the Portland area.
