Okay- I am currently pursuing my ADN but i have a Bachelor's in an unrelated field. Anyways- I would love to work as an RN at a military base hospital when I graduate. My confusion is that I dont want to join the military but rather work as a civilian at a base hospital possibly Balboa in San Diego or even the Navy hospital at Pendleton. Is this even possible to do and is hard to work as a civilian nurse on a base. If so, are you hired as a federal employee? I keep seeing posts about working for the VA as a civilian but I dont necessarily want to work specifically at a VA hospital. I have so much respect for the military and would love to work in that environment but dont know where to begin to see if they even hire new grads. Please help. Thank you- Toby

I have the same questions about Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia, I know they do have a lot of civilian nurses that work there but I would also like to know about the pay, benefits and how to go about getting hired. I'm just starting school but I'd like a heads up. I will be having clinicals there and I'm sure I will get info then but thats not for a long time.

Veteran Hospitals are nationwide & nurses are federal employees called title 38, if you look into USA Jobs you will see both Military or VA Hospitals, Outpatient Clinic & homecare etc....

What is nice about the federal system is that you can transfer to another other position, keep your senioroty & maintain only 1nursing license

To apply for those jobs go the the hospitals they have a nurse recruiter that works there to hire Civilian staff. You can build a resume first in the system at http://www.CPOL.mil . CPOL stand for Civilian Personnel On Line. Start there you should get results.
