Hello friends,
I need advice as I am in an dilemma. I graduated last year and went back home for 5 months so of course when i came back 3 months ago all the jobs were taken. I applied everywhere except for nursing homes but after your advices and family as well i gave it a shot and now Im offered a position. Last week I went on 4 different interviews with top hospitals in my area which was a dream come true. And one them asked me to come back a second time so I have hope that something will happen there, but it's only hope. My dream were to graduate become an RN, work for a hospital and join a masters program in 1-2 years. Working in a nursing home was not the plan. I would like to ask you people what advice do you have for me. Im also thinking of coming clean with the lady who hired me today and tell her that i might quit if any one of the hospitals call me. Please let me know what you think. Im sorry for the length but wanted you guys to get the picture. Thanks

I don't think the manager for that nursing home facility will hire you if you say you might quit if any of the hospitals call you.
I wouldn't waste my time (with all the orientation, training) to an employee who is just gonna leave anytime soon.
I suggest to just get a part time or on-call position if you're really skeptic about nursing homes. Also, piece of advice, find a nursing home with rehab unit.
I got hired by a big hospital even I have a few months of rehab experience in a small time facility.

Unless you get the hospital position, stick with the nursing home; nursing experience is better than no experience.
And DO NOT tell the nursing home that you will quit; it's none of their business, especially when you are in the interviewing stage. Give proper notice if you get this job.
Best wishes.
Thanks
Yes it is a short term rehab center as well and I will be working there. So I guess I won't say anything for now. Thank you so much.
Thanks LadyFree28
I will do that because I need the experience and it has been a year since i graduated and so far every interviewer asked me the same question. Why didn't you work and when I say I traveled back home for 5 months they seem relieved. I need to get in somewhere. Thanks again.

Believe me I had the same feelings as you when I started my career. But I'm so happy I got to work at a nursing home. I was on the rehab unit and I got to see so much. I learned how to put Foleys in, how to trouble shoot them. How to place IVs. How to do dressing changes. How to change a picc dressing and d/c them. I learned about tube feeding and about tpn. Even how to change a wound vac and trouble shoot them.
I really feel that it helped put me ahead of others. I work at a hospital now on their rehab unit and I can easily jump in for anything that needs to be done.
