Good books for a pre-college student to read

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I start college in three months, and I am wondering what are some good books to read before I start? Should I start reading Nursing books? If so, what are some good ones?

If you haven't done any prerequisite courses yet, picking up a nursing book would be useless because you won't have the foundation to understand what the book is saying :) I would just worry about taking your nursing prerequisite courses first. You will be taking biology, anatomy & physiology 1 and 2, microbiology, and chemistry. For gen ed classes you will take college algebra, statistics, general psych, lifespan psych, speech, and some random history and humanities courses. This is just a very basic idea of the classes you will be taking before you start nursing school. But the specifics depend on the school you go to. Be prepared your sophomore year to take a pre admissions exam as part of your application to nursing school. The test will cover math, science, reading, and grammar. There are many versions of this test, your school will choose a specific one (usually the HESI or TEAS test). If you're really looking to read up on some science stuff, pick up an Anatomy and physiology study book. That will be really helpful.

You'll have plenty to read once you start. You could find a book that's about study skills. I don't know of one off the top of my head, but I know there are plenty out there. I would focus on planning your schedule (including study time), organizing your house, and collecting school supplies. Buy a mini stapler. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen people show up to class with unstapled papers because they don't have a stapler. Seriously. You can get a mini one for two bucks and keep it in your backpack. (But don't tell other people that you have one.) Professors like staples. And when you finish that look up your professors on ratemyprofessors.com, making note of which ones are hot, so on the first class day you can see if the reviewers were correct. :p Really, time will fly and in a few months you'll wish you didn't have to read.
