I just moved out of orlando but am very familiar with the area so here goes...winter park is nice but expensive, waterford lakes and avalon park are newer communities started which are nice and less expensive than winter aprk but still pricey, casselberry and maitland (little outside of orlando) isnt too pricey and still nice...stay away from the airport area-it tends to be kind of sketchy- i used to live in an aprtment out there and didint like it- then again there could be nice areas mixed in with the bad ones. oveido is nice-there are townhouses everywhere so if you cant afford a house right away you might look into one of those-also if you are moving from another state you might not think hte prices are bad at all. good luck

The housing market is literally insane here. The prices are outrageous. Prices are going up and up. My father just moved down from Michigan and is having a hard time finding "reasonable" houses. He is looking up in Volusia County which is 2 counties North of Orange County/Orlando. I agree with the other poster, Winter Park is great but pricey as well as just about everywhere downtown. If you go out West, East or North (Ocoee, Waterford Lakes and Sanford--respectively) the prices go to appx $100-$120/sq. ft. of house.

Hope this helps, would be nice to know in the range that you can afford, because if you are coming from up north, you can afford some good places.

My fiance' and I are from the LA/MS area, so we are used to lower prices I guess. Right now, we can afford a max of 130k, which apparently will not go far here. We both work in the center/east part of Orlando, so we are hoping to buy a house in Orlando so that we do not have to commute too far. Thanks for your comment.

Its called dont live IN Orlando. Housing is very tight in Florida in general and the metro areas specificly. Its going to take some give and take. For example how much you want to spend is going to corilate (sp) to how far/long one wants to commute. A 30 min drive is going to cost you more in housing than an hour drive.

Do you want to live in a house or a condo? Do you want to build or buy existing homes?

My wife and I are relocating to the general Orlando area ourselves. I decided to take some travel assignments to get there and to get a feel of things. Watch the news, read the newspapers and talk with coworkers.

What does everyone think about the Hanies City/Davenport area?

Looks to be a rapidly growing area. Havent heard much about it but Heart of Florida Hospital looks pretty nice. A fairly new hospital build right off US 27. My stepdaughter and family live just down the road in Winter Haven. He DH works in Orlando his commute typically is 45 mins, he generally leaves home at around 8am however. They got a nice 3br 2bath for around 170,000, w/ pool. Also alot of new subdivisions going up in the general area.

That and there are alot of hospitals within an hour or so's drive from there.
