Going to School in 1 state, but wanting to work in another?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I'm graduating from my nursing program in Louisiana soon. How can I be eligible to work in other states, for instance Texas, after I'm licensed? HELP?! I want to have flexibility to move and work all over the country, but how do I transfer from one state to another?

Specializes in PICU, Sedation/Radiology, PACU.

In order to work in a state, you have to be licensed in that state.

When you first take the NCLEX and apply for a license, apply in the state where you most want to work. If you are going to work in Louisiana before moving, then apply for your license in Louisiana.

Once you have a license, if you want to work in another state, you have to apply for endorsement in that state. It's very similar to applying for your license, except you don't have to take the NCLEX again. You'll have to apply for endorsement in every state where you want to work. In addition, if you want to maintain your licenses in each state, you'll have to pay the renewal fee every one or two years.

The exception is if you work in a compact state. Compact states have an agreement with one another to allow nurses who hold licenses in other states to work in a compact state without specifically obtaining a new license. Here's a list of compact states. List of Nurse License Compact States

Look up the BON website for the state you would like to apply to, and you'll find specific information about their process and requirements.

thank you sooooo much! this information has eased my worries!!!! :nurse::w00t:
