Going for RN...what should I do?

Published

Hi everyone,

Im a student in a community college trying to become an RN. Basicaly so far I have persued most general pre reqs required such as anatomy, physiology, micro... Im trying to get into a RN program immediatley and don't know what to do at this point.

I don't want to persue RN through colleges because of the wait reason. I hear lotterys may take long. Although I hear private schools take you on the spot. I know that there is a cost variation between the two but im willing to pay for that. I also hear that there is a lvn-RN bridge programs in some private schools but then that would mean I have to take all the courses again which I struggled to do so and definatly avoiding.

My problem is simply my grades are all "C" s. I don't meet the cirteria for most colleges which is why im stuck with only private schools.

Is there any private schools out there excluding online that require you to have pre reqs completed only in order to get in or do you have to have an LVN liscence and then the pre reqs....im just trying to find the easy way out without getting that darn LVN lisence.

What should I do?

What should I do?

Try harder. RN school is VERY difficult. If you're not doing so hot in your prereqs, you need to step up your game a bit. If you're struggling with micro and A+P then you will have a lot of problems with RN school. You might want to step back and rethink possibly retaking the prereqs in order to hone your study skills. That's not a bad thing, it will simply benefit you in the long run. You will thank yourself for doing so when you're not failing out of nursing school (and believe me, nursing schools are more than happy to cut students at the drop of a hat).

Reading your post, it seems like you want to become an RN as soon as possible. That's understandable. But you have to realize that schooling is a process. For some, it is a long process. Diploma schools are a thing of the past. That's just the way it is.

There are still plenty of hospital-based diploma schools around, in some areas, but they are not any easier to get into, or to complete, than any other legitimate nursing program. The diploma school I attended was much more demanding and difficult than the ADN and BSN programs I have taught in since then ...

I think the OP may be referring to some of the private-for-profit specialty schools, some of which (not all!) are little more than outright scams. I'm in NC, and The Charlotte Observer did an in-depth series a few years ago about schools like this in NC that were basically just financial scams to rip people off for federal student loan money ...

To the OP, I appreciate that you want a quick, easy way to become an RN, but there's no such thing. And why should there be? If you were sick and hospitalized, would you want to have your life depend on someone who found some way to "game the system" to get licensed because s/he couldn't make it the "regular" way? The reality is that (legitimate) nursing schools are very competitive these days, and a "C" student is just not very competitive. Additionally, a "C" student (in general college) is not likely to survive (academically) in nursing school -- take a look at all the threads here about students who were "A" students in high school and through their preprequisites, and are now struggling to make passing grades in their nursing classes! :( Nursing school is HARD -- as it needs to be. because it's HARD to be a nurse.

If you're willing to look hard enough and go anywhere you have to to get in, there is probably a school somewhere that will take you -- but be very careful that you're paying for a legitimate program and an adequate education. There are a lot of programs that will happily charge you a fortune, take your $$$, provide you a minimal education, and not care when you can't pass boards or get a job.

im at a private school right now and i tell you the cost for classes are ridiculous !!!!!!! It started off 340 a credit hour and now it has increase to 440 a credit hour by the summer semester im paying like 15,k each semester i may have to rethink some things . But they got me in right away so thats the good thing about it but the cost is not worth it :( i may have to do some research my self
