Going to Oakland Community College ... Should I retake BIO1530?

Published

Hi!

My name's Tyler and I'm new here :D

Anyway, I'm wondering if I should retake BIO1530 (Biology 1) to prepare for BIO1570 (microbiology of Health and Disease) and BIO2630 (Human Anatomy and Physiology 1). I've forgotten just about everything I've learned since (it's been 5 years) I last took BIO1530.

BIO1530 is a prerequisite to both of these courses as long as it was within the last 5 years. I got an A. It's been exactly 5 years, so I need to take BIO1530 and BIO2630 now or take the placement exam after, which I'm not confident about.

My Question: Will I be completely lost in Microbiology of H&D and A&P if my current BIO understanding is very low? I have to register on Wednesday (7/13/11)

THANK YOU!

Ty

Hey Tyler! What have you been doing since you last took that Bio class? The reason that I am asking is that the last time I took Bio 1 and 2 was ten years ago but since then I had been working as a Vet Tech and therefore stayed up on what the classes entail.

When I started my RN pre-reqs and took A&P 1 and 2 I flew threw with and A in both without much issue and didn't really have to study as much as the other students. I don't think you will have a problem and you can save the expense and time it will take to do the Bio 1 unless you really feel that you will need it and if it will give you more confidance.

And as far as Microbio, what is covered in Bio (from what I remember) is very different so I don't see it helping you out where that class is concerned.

A&P 1 was pretty basic and helps you get into the grove for the more advanced A&P 2. Don't stress, I think you will do just fine!

Greetings!

I originally started taking my pre-reqs for vet school at OCC. I went from 2006-2008. Then I became content at my job as a manager at my work. Recently I've decided I need a career where I can help people and be better off financially. I spoke with my vet, he had me make a bunch of lists of what I want out of my career and, long story short, Nursing was at the top! :)

Thank you very much for the response! It's very reassuring. I've got an A in all my prereqs so far, while working, so hopefully I can pull this off! I'm either going to take Micro and A&P simultaneously, while working full time (which might be a disaster?) or Micro and Comp 2 and then pray I pass the placement exam to get into A&P. I do need an A in everything as the OCC RN program goes by GPA only.

Ideally I'd like to take A&P 1 simultaneously with Micro ... I'm just a little apprehensive b/c I'm working full time and I'm so rusty on my basic BIO.

It is hard to take classes and work full-time, there won't be much time left over for relaxing or watching your fav TV show, but you will do fine.

Why do you have to take a placement exam to get into A&P?

As far as which classes to take together will depend on when you are going to apply to the RN program and how much time you have left to get the classes done. My school does theirs on a point system...the more pre-reqs you have finished and the better the grade in them determines whether you will get in or not. Some students got into the program and still hadn't finished their A&P 2 or their Micro and were trying to take those as well as the nursing classes and they were feeling the strain! I waited an extra year to apply to the RN program just so I could have ALL my pre-reqs done so that I would have the best chance possible to get in and so that I could concentrate just on RN classes.

No, dont take it. I had micro without biology 1 and got an A.
