Going to Nursing School!

Published

Hi everyone! I'm new to Allnurses, and I just need to get this off my chest and get some feedback/advice. I'm very excited to start nursing school this coming fall. My life is about to change dramatically, and to be honest, even though I'm excited, I'm also scared. :uhoh3: I've had a full-time job since I was 19 at the same facility. I'm married with two children, and never been a full-time student. I took all my prereqs in the evening and online. The plan was that I wait until my husband finished school and found himself a good job (which has happened...he starts his new job Feb. 9th), then I can go to nursing school. We are very excited! I'm ecstatic about this, and absolutely cannot wait, but I just feel strange quitting my job to be a full-time student and depend mostly on my husband's income. (I'll probably have to work part-time in the evenings.) Not only that, but I know nursing school is no walk in the park, and will be very time-consuming. I'm also hoping that he will be understanding of this, and help me out around the house and with the kids more. It seems like things are finally starting to come together for us, and we'll be able to accomplish our goals, but I'm worried too. I just don't want anything to mess up! Has anyone else been in my shoes? I would like feedback or suggestions about making things easier and better. Thanks!!

Are you feeling guilty about quitting your job? Look at the big picture. You are putting yourself through school to provide a better future for your family. It wont' be easy, but with good communication skills with your husband, you can do it. I would hope that he would support you the way you supported him through his education. I recently enrolled in a BSN program. We discussed what needed to happen in order for me to be succesful. By working together, it's all worked out. Come up with a game plan as to who does what....grocery shopping, laundry, errands etc. That's what helps us.

You can do this! Good luck.

I just finished my second week of NS, and I'm definitely still adjusting. I went from working FT to about 12 hrs/wk. now. My husband can't find FT work, so we're living off savings and our combined nearly FT income. So far it seems to be working out okay. We're both having to compromise a bit of course. He's helping me to clean and keep the house straightened more, but I'm also learning to relax my standards a bit when it comes to the house. Honestly, most days I really don't have time to worry about it.

You supported your husband through his schooling, so now it's his turn. Realize that some days you're gonna have blowouts, and that's just reality. It is a period of adjustment, but even after only two weeks, I feel like I'm starting to get into the groove of things. Hang in there, and congratulations! :yeah:

I also just finished my 2nd week in nursing school, and I agree that it's tough! But, I know it will be worth it. My situation is my husband and I separated (after 16 years of marriage) right before nursing school, so I am having to do it all on my own.

I'm sure you and hubby can work through all the domestic chores. What you may not have thought about is focusing on your relationship while in school. It's easy to get caught up in studying and kids and chores and money. But, the most important thing is your marriage. Make sure to schedule time together...even if it's just a 10-minute chat each day. Don't allow the stress and time constraints to drive you two apart. You both have needs that must continue to be fulfilled.

Good luck, and keep on swimming!

Congratulations on your acceptance into nursing school!

It's completely normal to be nervous/scared/excited - your life is about to change in a big way! Yes, it will be tough, but you can do it.

Thanks for all your advice and encouraging words! I'm starting to get more excited as the time gets closer (even though it's about 6 months away)! Today I registered for the NET, which is in April. Now I have to decide when to go to Open House, which I think I'll do that also in April. Also bought a study guide for the NET and already studying! I have to get everything done before May 1st, that's why I've started so early. Thanks again for the support! :redpinkhe
