Going into 2nd week of A&P and freaking out over chemistry....

I took Chem. int the fall of last year and got an A. Notice I said "got", because that is what we went over last week in class, and I don't recognize and/or remember half of what the instructor was saying!!! What is a covalent bond? I have three weeks before my first exam and I am freaking out!!!!

I'm taking a class called basic biological concepts that covers both biology and chemistry. A refresher course for those that have been out of school for awhile or have never taken either. Supposedly those who take it first have a higher pass rate for a&p and micro so we'll see lol.

ANYWAY, I have two textbooks and the biology one goes into chemistry some what but the actual chemistry text helps A LOT. It goes through the basics and then some using simple wording. It's set up differently though. It gives a short paragraph describing the topic with diagrams. Then it gives you problems to work through as you go, they start easy and build up to harder things. The answers on the side of the pages and comes with a piece in the book you tear out to cover the answers and test yourself. The book is An Introduction to Chemistry for Biology Students by George I. Sackheim. The isbn is 0-805-33970-1 It's the 8th edition btw, red and black cover.

I highly recommend it if you're struggling. It made understanding covalent, polar and hydrogen bonds so much easier for me.

I am so with you on the chemistry. I'm 36 and I flunked chemistry in high school. Not that I really tried back at 16 years old...

Anyway-does your book come with a CD tutorial thing? I can't stress how glad I am that I decided to pop it in. Very helpful. And Eric-thank you for the fabulous website!

Don't worry-you've already gotten an A-have confidence. You can do anything! Just study study and keep utilizing these spectacular forums! :)

Sorry about that-My A&P book does not come with a cd-My microbiology book does. However, some books do come with a website you can go to for help.

We just finished the chemistry chapter in A&P and the teacher seriously made me dumber. I love chemistry and I had to ignore him and remember what I learned. Gads...he doesn't know anything.

But don't freak out! Chemistry is fun!

Covalent bond: sharing of electrons, usually nonmetals

Polar covalent bond: unequal sharing of elections, produces a dipole moment (H2O is an example)

Nonpolar covalent: equal sharing of electrons (CH4)

Ionic bond: transfer of electrons, usually a metal and a nonmetal, when dissociated in water forms a cation and anion (NaCl)
