Going to Hopkins in July! need some advice

Published

Hello all,

I am going to hopkins mph program this july, and unfortunately only recieved my acceptance letter last week, so i feel like i have a lot to do in a short time.

Number one on my list is housing; the program is only 11 months. Anyone know anything about Reed Hall? I have a car that I would like to bring down as well. I have some friends who are in a amazing townhouse that is 30-40 minutes away, by wheaton metro? and would love for me to live with them too. but i don't know if it's really only 30-40 minutes, it could be more like 50-60 :o

how would parking work if i drove in?

Some of the other areas that people mentioned (charles village, mt. vernon, etc.) sound nice too, although I would like to have roommates--any idea how that would work? plus, the idea that there's a shuttle sounds REALLY good, don't want to put my car through more than I have too, and I wouldn't feel so far away from the whole baltimore experience.

anyway, thanks for any thoughts guys! t.

Yeah, B-more is a tough city. It was quite a transition when moving from the farm. BUT, all those tough people are generally very nice. In Baltimore, you can say 'hi' to random locals on the street; that is difficult in almost every other large city in North America.

It is sometimes the most annoying place to live. Lacks mass transit, grocery stores, pizza delivery, bakeries, cafes. Of course, they exist but are a little harder to find. Charles Village is nice, and they should have a shuttle to JHU and much of it is walking distance to the Homewood campus. Plus, Charles Vill. is the most likely place to have all those amenities B-more tends to lack. Mt. V is a little more in the middle of the action.

Oh, and try to stay west of Calvert St. even on Calvert st. but not east. Not a big deal in Charles vill. but trust me. w/ Mt. V... but there is almost no housing over there anyway. I recommend St. Paul st area of both Mt. V and Charles Vill.

hey all thanks for the advice :)

does anyone know anything about the area around cresmont ave and fell's point? and parking by the public health building? thanks! man, in undergrad they just told me to live somewhere and i did! i hate making decisions! t.

Fells Point is not as well connected to mass transit but it may be (long) walking distance to JHU depending on the area. It is usually a more expensive, more gentrified area but slightly less crime.

True, but be warned about Fells' Point, as I was initially looking to buy a house there. There are a TON of bars in the area; it is a huge mecca for drunken bar-hoppers. I'm not sure where Cresmont is, but on weekends you can smell the stale beer all around Broadway and Thames. Parking is extemely tight. Canton is nearby, and a bit quieter and cleaner.

Cresmont is at the southern end of JHU's Homewood Campus in Charles Village. It's 2 - 3 blocks away from the JHMI shuttle between the Homewood campus and the hospital/nursing school. There's a police station 3 blocks away, so Cresmont is very safe. It does not have the "happening bar night life" of Fells Point if that's what you are seeking.

Fells Point is part of the Inner Harbor, SE of Hopkins. It has been rehab'd so there are a lot of remodelled townhouses there. The neighborhood is quaint. Some students walk to the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the nursing school from there during the day. (There is no JHMI shuttle service.)

However, you don't want to walk by yourself from the hospital at night. The neighborhood in between (near Patterson Park) is not so safe. There are streets you definitely don't want to walk down to get back to Fells Point. (That's what I was told by some current students.) I also saw several rowhouses that were boarded up in those "not so nice" neighborhoods. You will be able to tell if you took the wrong street or not. If you want to live in Fells Point, rely on your street sense intuition and you'll be OK.

I looked at apts there once. I really wasn't all that impressed, especially with the price. Charles Towers is a much better deal, the apts are huge. If you were looking for slightly nice apts I would check out Gallery Towers on Centre. I think that they give Hopkins students a discount there. Don't quote me. I am familiar with many of the apt buildings in Mt. Vernon/Downtown. Feel free to PM me.

hi, i actually am sharing this place with a roommate, so price wise it would be less, i thought it was okay, except for the construction...man, i wonder how international students deal with this! t.

International students or any student for that matter who does not want to look for housing probably applies for on-campus housing through the JHU system. Or they have a friend affiliated with the campus who can help scout out places. Here's the Johns Hopkins housing link:

Hey, I was pretty much in the same boat as you. I'm starting the Accelerated BSN program at Hopkins in June and went up there for the first time last weekend from Texas to get things figured out. The first place I saw in the city was awful, I was afraid to get out of my car. I honestly thought about not going, but once one of the other new students drove me around and showed me the nice areas of town to live, I felt much better. I ended up renting a place in Washington Village, however, Charles Village, Mt. Vernon, Mt. Washington, Bolten Hill, Fells Point and Canton are nice as well. The rent is the cheapist is Charles Village and Washington Village. I'm planning to ride the Metro (subway) to class everyday, or I'm also considering riding my bike (I need to drive the route more though, I'm not sure it's totally safe).

Some of the other new students rented places in Cresmont lofts in the Cresmont area. Personally I did not feel safe there, we ate there one afternoon.

If you want roommates that are nursing students, you may consider checking some of the postings on accelerated BSN group's yahoo group at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jhuson_accel2005/ Several people are looking for roomies. I think the traditional BSN program also has a yahoo group started, you may want to check that out too. I realize these are groups for undergrads, but the accelerated students must already have a bachelor's in something else, so you're unlikely to get stuck with someone who is not serious about school.

Good luck, feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

I am at the Cresmont Loft Apts. I felt totally safe. It's 3 blocks from the police station, 3 blocks from the Homewood campus shuttle and it does not have the feel of drug dealers around the corner. (There are some places in Charles Village that do feel that way, especially if you walk 4 blocks East of Charles Village proper.) If you want to see pics of Cresmont, here's the URL: http://www.cresmontlofts.com/index-flash.html

Greg, the apt manager is really nice. You can tell him Jeannie sent you. There are traditional students and acclerated nursing students already in the building! Good luck in finding your apt.
