Going from Full-time Career to Part-time Work while in Nursing School

I did this and took a huge paycut. My wife worked full-time so we're getting by. We had to make huge lifestyle changes to make this happen. I'm not going to lie, it's not easy, we miss somethings and hurt from not being able to do some stuff we want. It is possible and will cause stress, but it is possible. I would recommend going over finances with your husband and make sure you will be able to make enough money. Look around for a possible side job that will be willing to work around your school.

My husband and I have been discussing going over the finances lately. Especially since he now wants to go back to school! At least his program will allow him to still work full-time and toward the end of his program, he will have to take a leave to do his OT internship. The other option I have been thinking about is starting with LPN even though I would still have to stop working full time but it would last only a year.

I took a huge paycut, so did my girlfriend so we could both get our feet in the door in heath care.

We enjoy our new, part time jobs much more than our old much better paying consulting jobs which were sucking the life out of each of us.

We don't have kids and pay cash for things like cars and live well within our means so it hasn't been all that difficult of a change for us. We both find our new jobs very rewarding and that payoff outweighs the financial losses. YMMV.

I am currently working full-time as a teacher and I am taking prereqs for a nursing degree. I wanted to hear others experiences from going from full-time work to working part-time. I have a husband, who works, and a 18 month old son to support. I will have to work while in school. The one part time program I looked at is now on conditional approval from the state licensing board. I am scared to apply there and all that is left is full-time programs. I am thinking about getting my CNA or PCT certification and working while in school but that is a HUGE paycut!

Hi, I am also a full time teacher. I will be starting a BSN program in August. My husband and I have three children and we are paying off bills so it will be easier when I start school. I do not plan on working the first year. I will go for a part time PCT position during the second year. It is a sacrifice but its temporary. I wish you the best.
