going back to school

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have been an RN (diploma in nursing)

since 1996, mostly as a hospice case

manager. I recently began working as the

DON of a home care company. There was

nobody in this position just prior to me,

so I am basically teaching myself the job.

I feel somewhat insecure in my ability to do

the job effectively, and have considered

taking some administrative type classes, or

possibly going back to school for my BS in

something to help me feel more effective.

Problem is, I have no idea what classes

might help me. Any ideas or suggestions?

If you're only looking to take only a course or two, I would suggest that you reach out to your facility's education/training department for suggestions...perhaps something in leadership and management. However, if you pursue a specific degree (bachelors or masters), that problem will be solved for you.

My BSN program touched on a few topics: community health, leadership and management, cultural diversity, informatics, etc. My MSN program is specialized to a specific area, but includes other topics.

Have you considered contacting a college for course options? Several of them offer certification courses for those who are not really seeking a degree at the moment. But these courses are only good for a specified number of years, usually from 2-5, before requiring recertification. Also, some programs offer individual courses for personal professional fulfillment. Inquire within..

I am the education and training department:) I have just begun looking into some local options. This is all fairly recent. I have been at home raising kids and homeschooling for over 10 years, and wwnt back to work about a year ago. It is sort of intimidating to think about navigating college along with my child!
