Going back to school

Published

Hi, I am new to this website and I am looking for some advice. I am a 31 year old mom of 4 who quit my RN program about 9 yrs ago when I had my daughter. At that time raising my children were more than my education and this fall they will all be in school, so I am feeling like I want to go back to school myself. I checked with the school I was at and they changed the way you get into the program and told me I would not be able to get into there program  unless i was an lvn first. I just want to find an RN program in the Sacramento area. I am confused and overwhelmed on where to go. Does any one have any advice or info on any of the schools. I have looked at Delta, Modesto JC, Sac-city, Sac State, and Western Career College. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:wink2:

Specializes in M/S, dialysis, home health, SNF.

I think I'd check out your local community college. I'd steer clear of online RN programs, myself. There's too much that's changed since you went to school.

Specializes in Telemetry, Med-Surg.

Welcome! Have you tried doing a search on this site using the key words "Sacramento" or "nursing schools in Sacramento"? Also, you can look in the state forum; just click on the Region tab at the top of the screen and select United States, then California. I'm sure there are many threads on here that already answer your question. Good luck!

Thanks for your response. The community college is the one who will not take me back. They said because of my grades 9 years ago I would not be picked from the lottery. They also will not allow you to redo the classes to bring up your chances of getting in Even though I was already accepted at one point in my life. I wish I could just get back in but what can I do.

Thanks for the helpful tips. I will look into that.

Hello, I am a 43 year old whom had been taking prereqs for my community college, but due to changes one of the instuctors of a program outside of the nursing program suggested the lpn program. I had refused this program for years, but now I'm glad she made the suggestion. After finishing the lpn program you can bridge and it will be the same length of time. There were several students in my class that had attempted the RN program and for several reasons decided to make a change. If it's something you want you may want to try it. It should also be a lot cheaper than online programs.

Thanks for your suggestion. Is and lpn the same as an lvn? What program is this at? I dont know if you are in my area at all but I did hear of a school that offered something like that. I was going to check into it. It is called Unitek College.
