Ok guys, this is it. Some background information first: I am 24 years old, with 2 children, and of course my husband. I went to college in 2008 and wasn't serious about it. Now my head is in the right place. I moved to Texas not too long ago, so my immediate family, i.e. Mom, Dad, Brothers, etc. are far away. My only support system is my husband and my kids. I work first shift (8-5), my husband works 2nd shift (1-9). I'm trying to get everything together at Tarrant County College so that I can get rolling with my pre-reqs for this coming Fall 2011 for their nursing program. It'll probably take me 3-5 years to complete the nursing program, pre-reqs and all. I am not good at math, which means I'm not that great with Chemistry. I pretty much live paycheck to paycheck with both my income and my husband's. Anyways, you get the gist. Do you guys think that I am reaching to far, or is this achievable? I have been doing so much research, and I really feel like this is what I want to do, but am I just in dreamer mode right now? I would like any input that anybody has. I would just like to know exactly what I'm getting myself into before I get in too deep.

I think it is very manageable if you have the dedication and drive to want to succeed, and it sounds like you do! you should not let math interfere with your passion. I am also horrible at math, however, i am continuing! keep your head up and take it one semester and class at a time, and you will do awesome!

I just graduated. I have 4 children, started pre reqs in 2004 when I was 25 and had 3 kids at the time. Granted I didn't work and I used Student Loans to pay for school and childcare to go to school. My school had a 3.5 year long waitlist and baby #4 came during that time. But I did move to a state and had no family or friends to help. My husband worked away for 5 months each winter so I had to be a single mom (not financially), anyway, again, I just graduated. It can be done. If this is what you want, then go for it.

I would like to agree with both JenWork and MiVidaLoca. I think it is a very achievable goal for you. I am a second career nurse and started taking pre-reqs at a community college here in Los Angeles in 2006 and I just started my nursing program this last fall (2010). Nursing is always a long, tough road, but even if you are just taking one class at a time, like I did, it will eventually add up. And don't worry too much about the math... In all honesty nursing does not require more than very basic math skills for most areas. Just find a way to get through chem the best you can... get a tutor or just sit next to the asian kid (just kidding!!). Remember that nursing is more about dedication and compassion than crunching numbers. It is a GREAT career that is worth struggling for, in my opinion. If you are interested, I have a blog I just started that is designed to help pre-nursing students and aspiring second career nurses.
Good luck AspiringRN!!!
