Goal = work with cleft/craniofacial patients

Specialties NP

Hello! I'm looking for a little bit of career guidance. I am a med/surg nurse with 2.5 years of experience at a Level I Trauma Center. I'm also involved as adjunct faculty teaching BSN clinicals, among other things. I'm getting burnt out on my floor and looking to move into a higher level of care.

I plan on going back to school to become an NP in the next few years. In the meantime I'm looking to move into a higher level of care. If I want to work with cleft/craniofacial patients (which many would be children), would it be detrimental to take an adult SSU or STICU position? I have never worked with children before, nor do I have my own. I'll be honest... I'm a bit intimidated by it!

Also, would the FNP route be appropriate for working with this population? My preference would be to see patients in clinic and also follow them when hospitalized. (I have to check on state laws regarding FNP's working within the hospital.)

If I'm going to make a move I want to make the right one. :)

Hello

I know a few people who have traveled to various countries through a charity called Operation Smile (Worldwide children). They help children who have various deformities, including cleft palate. It sounds like this might be the type of experience you are looking for. Good luck!

I was just going to suggest Operation Smile! Look into it. They have a great mission.
