Hello,
I recently just changed my career around, I was in business and I am now going to Nursing school (and loving it) and my goal in life is to become a Nurse Anesthetist.
I have a Bachelor's in Business and plan to go into critical care for 5 yrs before I start my journey as a CRNA...my question is: Do I need a BSN or does my BSB fit because a Bachelor degree is required but does it matter in what?? Also do I need the MSN?? I am not getting a BSN in nursing I am getting an associate in Nursing- RN.
Could I just go from RN to MSN because of my BSB or do I need the BSN first???
I hope this makes sense what I am inquiring, I am just a little confuse. :stone

Thanks,
I do have a "plan B",I will be sending out apps. to other schools as well,UAB is my first choice and they are doing great things there.I am just hopeing and praying to avoid another big move.(I am a Katrina evac. from N'alins still recovering from that trauma)that, and I have some RN friends who also relocated to Burmingham and attend a church of the same faith as mine, different fellowship, who are good friends with one of its members who happens to be the cheif of anesthesiaology at UABMC, and he and his wife are good friends with the youth director of my church, also a good friend of mine.He wants to meet me and "talk",I think he might be someone worth getting to know, sure couldn't hurt. So,its just possible I may have an inside track when it comes to aplication time, but I know I will still have to make the grades and get the experence(I am also reading as much as I can on anesthesia). But I think you would agree, any thing that I could use in my favor I should take advantage of,I am not saying he should sign me off to being accepted, but a letter of recomendation from him would look good with my app.
What do y'all think?Again thank you for all your input

Brian,
I had printed off your reply and took it home to read as I had to get to class,it was long but not rambling, thats why I am answering now.
I see your point about why I want to go into this proffesion, but it is somthing I have wanted to do for quite some time.
I am a Vet Tech.,and as such we get to do anesthesia, along with a lot of other "nursing" jobs and it was at this time that I became facinated with the science of anesthesia.
If I were going to become a doctor,an anethesiaologist is what I would become.Yes,I do admire the money, but the main reason I want to get into this field is the chalenge and responsibility of the job.
Some have said the job can be very boring, maybe so to them, but, when that pt. who's life is in your hands starts to crump,I fail to see how trying to save his life without leaving brain damage can be boring. Kinda like how a test pilot must feel when his engine stalls and he is falling like a rock and can't get it started again,at least not on the first try, then he hears those turbins start to spool up and pulls it out of a nose dive and safely lands the plane.Thats how I can imagine it to be like bringing that pt. back.
I would prefer not to have the drama, but its the knowing that it can happen and its up to me to save the pt.when and if somthing goes wrong.
It is an awsome responsibility and is not to be taken lightly.
I can handle boring,One time, while working for a zoo,I had to watch an incubator "all night" with some very rare Sharp nose viper(Deinagkistrodon acutus) eggs in it and keep notes or seperate them if they hatch, eggs arent very entertaining to look at. and as for listening to ego's,some of the vets and curators I had to work with, you would think they walk on water.
I think I am going into it with the right reasons,as when I was working with animals,I am all about my pt's.wellbeing first, and it would be incumbent apon me to do all I can to make sure the proceedure will be uneventful, both as a nurse and a CRNA.
I hope and pray I will be given the chance to do that.NOW,thats long!
Regards,James

It sounds like you have a solid plan. A couple of thigns to think about though?? You are not in a BSN program yet, correct? So do not look past other types of nursing only to concentrate on CRNA school, some 5-6 or more years from now. That is not to discourage you, but a lot can happen in 5 or 6 years that may chnage your mind. Many, and I mean MANY pre nursing and young nursing students admire the salary of a CRNA, and they think that they are gonna always want that job. Unfortunately most young nursing students have not had the oppurtunity to shadow a CRNA(for more than 1 hour), or at all, and do not really understand what it is that CRNA's do. That was not to discourage anyone in their dreams, but take a look now and in a couple of years to see where those dreams are based. Are they based in the reality of the job, or the glory of the great points of the job. Could you really sit in one spot, watching one monitor, with one patient, listening to the super ego of surgeons for 8 hours, every day as your career. Your answer now should not be YESSS, because you dont truly know what they do. Your answer should be, (IMHO) "I think so. I want to learn as much abiout it as possible to make the best choices possible." That would be the most honest and best answer(in my opinion) My answer is yes and I can not wait to do it. But i have been a RN for 3+ years, hav shadowed countless times, and have done extreme research into the profession; the history, legal, social and political climate.
i see so many young people glory eyed over the salary, which i am SOOOO happy to have students who want to be and exited about CRNA's, but I want them to keep all their options open, so as to provide the best education and experience as possible, which will in turn lead to you being the strongest canidate possible. Good luck with your endeavor. It may see like a never ending tail spin, but you will survive.
Brian
