GN Residency and New Grad Hirings?

Published

Hi I'm new to allnurses.com. I have a question, I know it's been answered before years back but I wanted to ask now for an updated answer and advice.

I graduate (God wiling) with my BSN at the end of December. I'm very interested in moving to Houston, but I am willing to move pretty much anywhere in Texas.(I'm from South Texas). I was just wondering if there's any hospitals that hire new grads and/or internships. I'm going to apply to Memorial Hermann and others but I understand it's a very "who you know" process. I know sometimes hospitals hire new grads, even though they don't like to admit it. Does anyone know any of those hospitals?

Also I was wondering how the new grad permit works in Texas, is it paperwork I have to do, or does my school do it and when hospitals ask for HESI exit scores (I got a 992) what are they asking for, like a computer printout from the website?

Thanks for your advice,

Given that you actually live in Texas and are graduating with a BSN, your chances at being hired into an internship are better than many can anticipate....certainly better than those graduating with ASN and/or trying to move here from out of state. Most of the hospitals have internships available. It is just exceedingly competitive. And yes - much of it is who you know or whether you have an inside contact, but having a BSN may help you. Start monitoring the job listings on the websites of the hospitals that interest you now. Between now and November they will be posting those and beginning to interview for them. If you wait until you graduate you will have missed the boat.

I can't answer about the HESI score but one can assume they will want proof, not just a verbal or written report. I have never heard of a new grad work permit. You get a temporary license for 90 days after your school has verified to the BON that you did graduate from your program, and that requires you to have registered with the BON 120 days prior to graduation and paid the licensing fee, done the background check/fingerprinting and have paid in advance to take the NCLEX. The BON website has all that info on it.
