Giving notice when transferring

I have been offered another job within my hospital system, and the recruiter of course told me I needed to notify my current unit manager before we proceed with the transfer process. She told me to call her, but I kind of feel like that is a bit too informal. Ideally I would like to speak with her face to face, however I work nightshift and rarely see her.

Is a written letter acceptable, and can it be emailed? This is honestly my first real job, and I am just unsure how to go about this without burning any bridges (however she did know I was looking, because I am wanting to go to days and there is nothing available on my current unit).

I would schedule a time to talk with her/him. Staying late after your shift or coming in a little early to have this discussion is the best option. When I wished to transfer (in my hospital if you apply for another unit your manager is immediately notified), I first emailed my NOM and asked if I could speak with her. I was under contract and would be breaking the contract to transfer so it was a conversation that I deemed appropriate prior to submitting applications.

Just focus on your desire to be challenged and gather new experiences and skills. Everyone must move on at some point to further develop their career.

I agree with the opinion that 'casual' is not the way to go. In addition, we always need to make sure that we leave a job in a professional matter - keeping it classy always. What's the organizational policy? If there is one, you need to follow it. In HR terms, 'transfer' is usually handled just like any other voluntary termination so you would have to follow the same process.
