No! That's crazy, you don't owe them that.

Yes - it sounds like the right thing to do.

No- it sounds like a good way to get fired.

Hello,

I have been working my first RN job since February (about 6 months). I have been mandated the maximum number of times under my contract, and several other nurses have too. Because I am low seniority (maybe 3rd from the bottom of the list), I am concerned about being laid off.

I have applied to other jobs, and have had a phone interview. Given the current climate on my unit with many mandates, should I tell my manager I am looking for other jobs?

I am not ready to give official notice, but the job I am hoping to get may or may not allow me to give 2 weeks notice. I feel like maybe I should be giving my current manager a "heads up" so to speak.

What do you think? Should I tell my current employer I am applying for other hospitals?

Thanks in advance!

Absolutely do not give your manager a head's up that you are looking. She's not going to give you a head's up that you are getting laid off. Just find another job and give notice when you have an offer in writing.

One thing I would check is the policy; for example - will you loose PTO with less than a year? Do they require 2 or 4 weeks? If you have a union, there may be guidance there. My union was 4 week notice and then my hospital was 2 weeks staff/4 weeks management. And we didn't get PTO cash out unless we were there a year.
