Giving info: San Jacinto College South LVN entrance HESI

U.S.A. Texas

Published

So the testing period for the Spring of 2009 session ended yesterday but you can start testing for fall in like January. Unfortunately they do not give you ANY information on what the HESI is, what it covers, or what to study. So to save everyone from the reactions many students had yesterday I thought I would share my experience:

The entrance HESI at San Jac South in Houston covered: Reading comprehension, math, grammar, and critical thinking. Some campuses do not test, others have MUCH harder versions including biology and the like. Common sense would say if they do not provide study preparations, it's probably just going to cover the basics I mentioned.

The math was for the most part 'basic' but if you have graduated more than 3 or 4 years ago you MUST study. There are decimals and fractions (you get a calculator so many of the questions are easy), but there are also conversions like oz to pints or gallons. Know those! Know length conversions also, kilometers...military time...roman numerals..PROPORTIONS (cross mulitply, very easy if you know how to solve). It is basic math, but if you don't remember how to add, subtract, multiply, or divide fractions this will kill you. You have to turn mixed fractions to improper and THEN solve those types of q's and turn them back. You get the point... (I got a 96)

Reading comprehension is very simple. You read very small articles and answer several questions based on it. The questions do a lot of 'inferring' though so it can get tricky. Most of the questions are straight forward and there's not much you can do to prepare for this. ( I got a 89- and was surprised to see it was that low)

Grammar- just know basic grammar. Know your tenses and proper spelling and you're set. (96)

Critical thinking- Patient scenerios in which you choose what you as a nurse should do first, or which patient needs attention most, or what to tell the patient. This is very subjective and tough. This is not included in your grade though! There are no study guides. KNOW YOUR CONVERSIONS, KNOW YOUR FRACTIONS,KNOW YOUR RATIOS.

As for the point system-- their program works on grades=points. 90-100 is 15 points 80-89 is 10 points and 75-79 is 5. You fail if below that. You get additional points (1-2) for things like incoming grades on prereqs., being a current cna, and possibly on gpa. There might be other little ones. Your HESI is VERY important and you may only take it ONE TIME an application period so DO WELL. Read the paperwork they provide to make sure you're even eligible to start the program before signing up for the hesi or you are out money. You need shots, prereqs...many things that you can't just get overnight. For this year there are no minimal amount of points to get it- they just have enough spots that they can fill.

Let it be known that I am no in affiliation with the program nor is this information meant to be used as official. They really do change the program a little almost every year and you should always consult with the school. I am just a prospective student trying to help others make it to their dreams of being a nurse. I hope I am allowed to do this and if not I'm sorry and please do not take legal action against me :redbeathe

Hi I just spoke with the lvn secretary and she stated that letters will be sent by email next week. Bummer!!!

Another week...that is a bummer! I'm anxious to find out!

I made a 93 on the HESI. I wonder how many people they accept? I know they had to add an additional HESI test day and when I went to turn in my application the day before the deadline, there was about 10 people waiting to turn in their's also...makes me think there were a lot of people applying.

I got an email from the vocational nursing admin in response to an email I sent, last Wed. She said we will know next week via email, how sad I am going stir crazy here waiting.

I GOT IN!!! I got my email this morning

Specializes in Operating Room.

I got in too!!! So excited!!!!

WHOOOO HOOOO! I got in too, found out on my way to school I had to pull over and read my email via phone and I was scared to open it. So now I am doing my happy dance....:dncgbby: congrats to all who where accepted.

Thank you so, so, so, so much for this posting. I took my HESI entrance exam today, and I could not be any happier with my score. I aced it!!

I got 100 on my math section, 97 on grammar, 96 on reading comprehension, and 900 on my critical thinking!

And it was all because of this information. I crammed all night trying to make sure I was ready, and it worked like an absolute charm.

Here's hoping I get in to the program!!

You will do fine, do you know when acceptances will go out? They took 60 when I started, and I scored a composite 91.3 and got in on the first round. Just be ready, the first 6 weeks are really tough because they throw alot at you. If you were fortunate enough to take a&p I and II and nutrition prior you will get credit for it and won't have to take it with all of the other first level classes. It is alot of work but very rewarding and can be a little intimidating. But the one word of advice I can give is don't obesses(sp.) over every little thing it will give you a headache and a lot of grey hair, I am a testament to that. Do all of your assigned reading and practice your skills alot to be ready for check offs and have a great understanding of a & p and you will be fine. Oh, and by the way uniforms are expensive I spent 347.00 and that included the nurses pack. Make sure to buy them with extra room because they shrink a little and you might gain some weight throughout the program ( we complain about that every day). Good Luck!

I have applied for spring 2011...I had 82.5 in my hesi...I have 4 extra points for making A and 1 point for gpa..so i did submit my application last week but i am so worried do i even have chance to get in...and what is the minimum requirement to get in to lvn programm at san jac south

I'm sure that you will get in. I believe that the gpa requirement for lvn at the south campus is a 2.0, but I'm not sure how many applied or how many they are taking in. I applied for both the ADN and LVN programs and am anxiously awaiting on emails from either. I sure hope that they will send them this week; the waiting is exhausting. Good luck to you:-)

Hi :) my name is Jeanette! I got accepted into the lvn program in the south and north campus... I am not sure which to attend... Any suggestions? I do want to go tosouth just because I am more familiar with the campus... I'm nervous and excited to start =]

Hi Jeanette! Congrats on getting in :)I also applied for the LVN Spring 2011 at South but didn't get in :(..I was told to re-apply and request for the packet to be mailed to my home..Does anyone have any info on the re-apply packet??
