What three characteristics do you think are most valuable for those considering a career in case management?

To have a successful career as a case manager, you must have three main characteristics.

1) A Case Manager must be able to respect a client's right to Autonomy. Although the client may not follow all recommendations on a plan of care, a good case manager will be respectful of the client's choices and be able to adjust the plan of care while respecting the client's choices.

2) A successful Case Manager should have empathy. The Case Manager should demonstrate compassion and respect when communicating with the client and family.

3) A successful Case Manager should demonstrate Veracity. By demonstrating honesty, being sure patients understand the plan of care and desired outcomes and showing respect for patients decisions, the Case Manager will build the trust of the client and family necessary for a successful outcome.

1. What is the most important thing you do as a case manager to show those you serve that they are at the center of care?

I try to remember each person is a unique individual with different needs and should be treated as the individual they are. Every situation is different and we should pay attention to each persons values and preferences.

2. What three things should you always keep top of mind when guiding clients through the current healthcare system?

a. We should always remember the healthcare system is ever changing and our patients have a difficult time understanding things are not what they were 26 years ago. (I have been a RN x 26 years)

b. Explain things on a level the patient can understand

c. We need to understand each patient's situation and what resources they have at their disposal.

3. In a few words, tell us how today's case manager can become a change agent within their organization.

They need to have good communication skills and earn the trust of their team. They should be a good listener and take others suggestions to heart. They need to be able to know the instances they can make a difference as well as those they cannot control.

4. What three characteristics do you think are most valuable for those considering a career in case management?

1-Flexibility

2-empathy

3-prioritizing

What three characteristics do you think are most valuable for those considering a career in case management?

-experience in nursing so you can have a basis for your recommendations,

-respect for the patients right to automony & choice, &

-Good communication skills & use of motivational interviewing

1.  What is the most important thing you do as a case manager to show those you serve that they are at the center of care?

-In my opinion, the most important trait a case manager can have is being a good listener to the patient. Being attentive and taking all concerns seriously should always be a priority. Anybody can create a plan of care, but it takes a special type of personality to have empathy. No question should ever be considered a "stupid" question!

2.  What three things should you always keep top of mind when guiding clients through the current healthcare system?

-Every patient has a different story and a different background. Some people might have better resources at their disposal, and even different emotional support. It is very important to assess every patient to properly personalize and implement their plan of care.

-Technology has changed rapidly over the years. Some of it can be confusing-it is important to be patient.

-A case manager is always a patient advocate, and especially when that person cannot be an advocate for themselves. This should always echo in the back of their mind.

3. In a few words, tell us how today's case manager can become a change agent within their organization.

-Being able to communicate firmly (but also nicely) is an important trait for a case manager to have. Getting your point across clearly, authentically-and CALMLY-makes a world of a difference. The way one speaks to others says a lot about someone-even more than the words themselves.

4. What three characteristics do you think are most valuable for those considering a career in case management?

-The three most important characteristics a case manager can have are patience (no pun intended obviously), the ability to be personable, and ambition.

Thank you all for taking the time to read my entry!
