Given the Texas Nursing Shortage-What is being done to attreact nurses?

Published

It seems like we should be using the same initiatives used to attract teachers. Initiatives like loan forgiveness would help? What do you think?

Sorry about the typo

I completely agree with the previous posters. There is a problem of nurses that leave the field due to working conditions. My previous employer staffed there medical floor with a minimum of 6:1 and frequently 8:1 with no nursing assistant, no phlebotomist, no EKG tech and minimal housekeeping staff. Wonder why they can't keep nurses! In addition, the culture at this facility supports physcians being ablsoutly UGLY with the nurses-no reprecussions for belligerant behavior. And this is a large hospital chain in Houston.

Now, the board of nursing wants to limit how many 12's we can work. Best ideas-write the board of nursing about work limits and push them to discuss staffing ratios. Also, write your represenatives in support of staffing ratios.

I dread getting sick; who will take care of us?

I thought 6 to 1 was bad- no way in (----) I'd do 8 to 1 on a medical floor under those conditions! There is a bill has been introduced in the Texas Legislature regarding staffing ratios.
