I'm not a nursing student, but my girlfriend is. She starts her program in the spring. I've watched her work incredibly hard to become an exceptional candidate for her program (99th percentile TEAs, 4.0, etc.) ...but enough bragging on her... I want to recognize her effort with a "starter kit" for xmas.
I've been lurking on other threads and have seen some great suggestions in terms of must-haves for incoming students. I am having trouble determining the best route to go as far as tech. I was going to get her a PDA with some clinical software, but I've read in some places where these devices are outdated and could have compatibility problems. The other route is a smartphone, but I don't know if having a phone out is prudent in a classroom or hospital setting, even if it is your reference/planner. It seems like some people still like having the PDA as a separate device....I just don't know!!!
Any current or former students with thoughts on this, or anyone with a redirect to a relevant thread would be appreciated. Also, anything (nursing related) you would like to see inside a big box under a note that reads "congratulations!"

How about a "nursing school survival kit" ... you could fill a basket with her favorite candies and coffee or gift card to Starbucks; a gift card for massages or pedi/mani's (a sweet treat after studying for hours on end), maybe find out what stethoscope she is looking at and get that for her. You could also go to Barnes & Noble and get a couple of cute nursing books or even the pocket NCLEX guide (I do not recall the name but it is a little flip style booklet)
Very sweet of you to come here and ask for suggestions ... I am sure she will love what ever you do!

Aww, this is very sweet of you!
Yeah, maybe somehow get an idea of what stethoscope she is looking at and get it for her. I'd suggest some cute nursing shoes for clinicals too. You could look at Nursemates (they're really cute to me!) or you could just get a basic comfy shoe that nurses suggest. If she's like me, she'd love a couple of nursing books from Barnes and Noble. You could get her a nurse-friendly watch too, and I definitely agree with the survival kit and the suggestions for it that dkm listed!
If you go with a stethoscope, medisave includes free engraving! You could add her initials to it so it's less likely to be stolen.
If you're looking for other items, you could refer here for what a lot of students have been recommending as must-haves! https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-student/what-item-s-111796.html
