I am so glad that you had such a wonderful preceptor. I would suggest a couple of things. First, you can't go wrong with a bookstore gift card... Barnes & Noble, Amazon, etc. Not over $20. Second - and this is a gift only you can provide - write a letter to your Chief Nursing Officer (cc your supervisor/manager) to acknowledge your preceptor's expertise. By making sure that the 'powers that be' are aware of just how valuable she is to the organization, you can effect her performance evaluations and career advancement.
I think it is great that you want to recognize your preceptor. The foundation you receive from a preceptor is irreplaceable. I would go with a small gift- a nice dr grip pen, a gift card for a scrubs store, a card with a handwritten message. The letter of acknowledgement is one of the best gifts for the preceptor. Recognizing those nurses that stand out is key. We have rose awards and annual nursing awards. Consider one of these modes of recognition if your facility gas them.
Thank you everyone for your responses. I had never thought to write a letter of acknowledgment. It was a wonderful idea. Actually, I just got done writting it. I also bought my nurse a little present with a thank you card and I bought the OR unit a cake from Costco..yummm! I was very fortunate to have such wonderful people guiding me during my preceptorship. Everyone in the unit took part in my education.

Hi everyone,
I am wondering what would be an appropriate gift for a preceptor? I know she stoped drinking/eating caffieine, so that excluded coffee and chocolates! Any ideas would be great...Thanks!
