Getting all 50 US Licenses

Nurses General Nursing

Okay so I'm venting a little but why in the world is it SO daunting to get an RN licensure in all 50 states? I mean I've been an RN for 12 years and am licensed in a compact state which already means that I'm good enough for 25 states by default. But Holy Cow, each additional state is a nightmare!

i am a telephone triage nurse and have to be licensed in all 50 states plus Washington DC and The Virgin Islands. Please don't get me wrong, I understand the money side of it and this isn't even about the money.

My my question is why does each state require fingerprints and background check through a different agency. I mean, no matter who I go through and pay for background checks, the fingerprints and information do not change! Don't get me wrong, it should be difficult to get licensed, but this is nonsense.

And it it seems each state adds one little caveat that is impossible. For example, Kansas requires that your out of state fingerprints be sent to them directly from the Sheriff's office. Hello, the Sheriff's offices DON'T DO THAT! My fingerprints don't change if I send them to you! Uggh! So frustrating! And don't even get me started on states that require a PAPER written application. It IS 2017!

How does making the process an expensive bureaucratic nightmare protect the public? And who are we protecting them from--Other great nurses with no complaints or restrictions?

Each board of nursing is established to set ground rules and enforce those rules on nurses, they protect the public from bad nurses.

Believe it or not but there are bad nurses, nurses that are indifferent to human life, nurses who are addicted to narcotics, nurses who are just plain dumb. Can you believe there are some nurses who go through the process of being licensed without even know WHY they are being licensed? Someone, somewhere, has to set the rules and enforce them.

A local community has the right to establish laws governing how they want nurses to practice within their community.

California isn't part of Nursys, either, and they charge a lot to have them verify that you have a CA license. One reason CA was my first choice to go inactive.

I joined this site just to say how happy I am that I googled "getting rn license in all 50 states" and I got just what I needed....I just finished my 8th day of training for tele triage rn so that hell you describe is exactly where I'm at right now!!!! I think I saw my family more travel nursing and it's one thing that it is completely different from everything I've ever been taught about nursing (it's like reprogramming the reprogramming that nursing school did to me ..... but seriously the freaking licenses, coming from a compact state (thank god, can you imagine getting 50 separate licenses). Ive started trying to tackle them little by little this week. I've paid for 2 so far (bet you could guess which 2) but they are hard to tackle after 8 hours of training....I mean seriously, what's the deal with live scan that from what I understand has to be done each time and new Jersey wants marriage licenses and birth certificates, some want verification from every nursing job you've ever had. ...I could go on as you know but I was just calming myself enough to go to bed ha ha but completely spot on, IT FREAKING 2017!!!!!! WHY ARE WE MAILING ANYTHING EXCEPT MAYBE TRANSCRIPTS FROM SCHOOL! WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR NURSES FOR VERIFICATION, OR SCREEN SHOT MY LICENSE AND MAIL IT, OR HAVE THEM SEND A COPY????? I originally had livescan fingerprints for my home state and you can verify my license by clicking 2 or 3 fields on the MSBON(like name and license number and the whole freaking thing comes up) it's ridiculous! But I have to pay for nursys for every state for what, what are they actually verifying? Maybe the licensing mess is an elaborate scheme to weed out people that think working from home is easy lol

The livescan part is driving me crazy! What is the point of scanned finger prints then if you have to do for each?

Having the ability to document fingerprints electronically internally is very different from sharing those documents with outside organizations.

It is hard to imagine since we drive across state lines like nothing but from a governmental standpoint you have to imagine each state as a separate country with different laws and regulations, hence the United States instead of the country of America.
