Getting into a specialty

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm finishing up my studies in my FNP program and I would really like to go into a speciality area. Because of some personal experiences, I really would like to go into gastroenterology. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on the process of getting an offer into a specialty (if possible!!!). I saw that Johns Hopkins offers a NP fellowship/Residency in Gastroenterology which is open to all NP graduates. Is that a program that I need to attend before being recruited into gastroenterology? For the GI NP's out there, what was the path you folks took to go into that field? I don't have previous nursing work experience in a GI clinic. So will I need to get a few years under my belt first before seeking out a speciality?

Thank you so much!

Start doing some clinical hours at a clinic or specialty unit. Imo that is the absolute way for a new grad to get a job.

Agree with Jules - its all about networking.

I will be honest - I got into nephrology by accident. I had no nephrology experience but did have loads of RN critical care exp and they really liked that.
