Getting Paid to Precept Students

Published

My friend recently sent me a link to a company called Clinical Match Me which says they can pay up to $10,000 to precept students.

Anyone hear of this or know of other companies that will pay NPs to precept students?

Thanks!

My school will not allow a student to use one of these services, but it does pay a small honorarium to the preceptor(s) when the student completes their clinical practicum. Personally, I'd love to see a clearinghouse run and managed by an independent third party that connects students with preceptors from all the programs and standards for the monitoring of said students (at least minimums) so that preceptors would know what is expected from student to student of them, and all schools would have to do a minimum of monitoring of the practicum. I think the current ad hoc system is not consistent enough.

While I love the "idea" and thought about something like that myself I don't think it's legitimate. I can only speak for my program but if they found out you paid a preceptor you are kicked out, period. I think it's ridiculous but they don't want you having a preceptor that has a financial incentive to make you look good. It has to be precepting b/c you want to advance the profession not make a profit. However, I have heard that schools pay hospitals and physicians when they do their internships/rounds so I don't understand why it's a problem. I even had one preceptor say they couldn't understand why "adjunct faculty" status wasn't given to them just as a token gesture since they are teaching the schools students for FREE! I agree. It's an odd situation where I pay tens of thousands of dollars to a school for rehashed exams and powerpoint lectures from a teacher I've never met but the preceptor who has me follow them around work for months is expected to do it pro-bono. But the rules rule and I am not inclined to get kicked out of school for something shady. Check with your school FIRST!

Eek! What a horrible, exploitative business! This makes me angry.

Thankfully my program offered my preceptors an honorarium and other benefits for them as professionals.
