Getting nervous..I need advice

Published

I was really excited to start grad school, but now I am anxious...I have been working for a year, but I still feel new. There's just a lot to learn on the floor. I am a full time RN.

I am going to take two online courses. One is philosophy in nursing that entails some group assignments, while the other is statistics which of course has quizzes and tests..

By the end of September, I will be trained to become charge nurse...

I need to keep a certain grade to qualify for the educational benefits...I am also quite a perfectionist during my undergrad, and I will most likely be the same here

has anyone been in this situation? Should I drop a course or get a feel for it first? advice greatly appreciated thanks!

I just started an fnp program this summer and took 9 credit hours in the 9 week summer term (theory, advanced practice roles, and advanced research). I worked full time and managed to make all A's but it required a lot of time. It's definitely doable but you have to be committed and focused.

Good luck!

Where are you going to school? Is it online? Are you going to continue full time in the fall? Just trying to get a sense of different schools out there for FNP programs

Thank you!

I also started NP school when I was a full-time floor nurse. I actually had plenty of time when I was working 3-12 hour shifts. I took up to three classes some semesters and didn't have any problem keeping up. It became much harder when I went to 5-8 hour shifts with a home hospice, which also required lots of documentation to be done on an overtime basis. Even when there was no overtime, I found myself too tired to study at 6 pm when I got home. I changed to just one class per semester and that seemed to be easier.

So I guess the lesson is, start with just one class if you are concerned; you can always take 2 next semester if you felt you were able to keep up with it. There is something to be said for giving yourself some time to enjoy the RN job and also enjoy your free time and catch up on your sleep.

Spring semester I was in my 2nd/3rd trimester, working full time in a busy outpatient clinic doing triage, and taking patho and pharm. all I can say is you can do it and it won't feel overwhelming if you are disciplined and can dedicate time to your coursework. It's also easier if you are more recently getting back into school because you are used to distance learning. It can be overwhelming if you have been out 15-20 years because then you have to adjust to the evolving learning style.
