I graduated Jan.09, I have a job however many of my classmates can't find work. About 90% haven't found a job yet. However many have been offer Psych jobs in Hospitals but turn it down because that is something they don't want to do. But can they work there in the Psych Ward for 6 months, and then when they see different RN job posting within there hospital then they can transfer to a different Dept?
I think times are hard now and they shouldn't be picky, or that is not a good idea?

January '09 grads are turning down any decent RN position? They must be nuts...they need to be reminded that Spring '09 grads are still looking and guess what? Dec '09 and Jan '10 grads are about to start searching as well.
Thanks you all for letting me know that I'm not nuts!!!!!!!!!I'll try to find out which Hospitals were hiring for Psych.
Even myself, I work in Dialysis, the last job on my list to ever work. But everyone told me to hold on to it until the freeze are lifted. But that is my goal, is to use Dialysis to get into a Hospital and then transfer to a different Dept. when one comes available.
But your right, when the freezes are lifted I still don't know if everyone can get hired. There are hundreds from different schools in Dec.08, and then spring 09, and now Dec. 09. Its going to be crazy.
Who knows when hospitals will start hiring again? I have heard rumors that hospitals will start hiring anywhere from January 2010 to maybe three years from now but these are just rumors. I haven't heard about a definite date from any reliable source nor have I seen anything in writting. What if hospitals start hiring but only need a few nurses? I am sure that by now there are hundreds or maybe even a thousand or two (gosh I hope not) new grad RNs in the NYC/metro area that need employment. Will is be possible for acute care facilities to absorb all of these new grads in the near future while at the same time even more grads are cranked out semester after semester?
I can't predict the future so maybe I am making the wrong choice by taking what is available right now? I don't know I feel so confused and I want to work as an RN right now not in another six months or year. I am also afraid of becoming stale. I graduated last April and I've been licensed for almost 6 months now. I was concerned that I would start to look like an undesireable candidate that no one wanted to hire if I waited to long.
These are just some rambling thoughs I have about the job market. I guess only time will tell if I am making the right choices.
