Getting a job in Calgary

Published

Hi I have been an RN working in a rural site just north of Edmonton, specializing in acute care and the ER. I have been working the last two and a half years and have been looking for a job in Calgary for sometime now. I have applied to more jobs then I can count and still have yet to get even one interview. I am looking to work pretty much anywhere at this point but my main passion is the ER. I am wondering if any of you have any tips that could help me land a job in Calgary. So far the only place I have been applying is on the AHS insite.

Is there a Calgary version of Covenant Health?

If you are truly wanting to move and lose your AHS seniority, try the private LTC companies

Thank you for the reply Fiona59

I looked and there is no Covenant Health hospitals in Calgary though I did just apply to a position in the ER in Banff. In regards to applying for the AHS positions would it be a good idea to contact the unit managers that have positions posted online to put a face to my resume?

The one worry I have about applying to private LTC companies is that I will have a difficult time finding a job in more acute areas after I have worked LTC for a while.

Specializes in geriatrics.

Covenant Care is located in Calgary.

To provide some perspective OP, a friend of mine recently received 240 applications for an LPN position. People are trying to move around with minimal success. I have also heard of another freeze with AHS in the event that positions are lost. That way, they can avoid layoffs.

Since oil has plummeted, the climate in Alberta is not good. Apply for everything.

You can try contacting managers, but they are obligated to give priority to internal applicants.

I really don't mean to be negative but the job situation in Alberta is horrendous right now and Calgary is especially bad. As others have said, apply for everything but you will have to be very patient!
