Hi all! New member here.
Since the only threads I see about GMU are from previous admissions cycles, I thought I'd start a new one for Fall 2013. The deadline just past... so who applied for this cycle?
April can't get here fast enough... let the waiting begin!
They said we would get a packet with a stethoscope, penlights, scissors, etc. during "boot camp," i.e. what they're now calling our orientation week... Yikes! So I will probably just wait and see what we get and then decide if I think I need a better stethoscope. Hopefully, it will be good quality and will save me the money!
Book list is posted! I don't even want to know the total price tag of all the books :-O
I think it's going to be $500-$750, depending on where you order the textbooks and whether you choose to rent (old or new) or buy (or or new). That's no small chunk of change...
sKris and catherinesmom: Did you and your classmates actually use all of the books they're asking us to purchase? Also, now that you guys are almost done with the program (just a few short weeks, right?), do you feel that it prepared you well?

You actually talked to someone about the packet? We're definitely getting it during orientation?
Some of the books I used, and will probably continue to use a references. Others, not so much. I haven't seen your book list so I don't know if they have changed things up or not.
We are almost done. I have 6 more shifts left of my preceptorship and I am done. July 31 cannot come soon enough. I have found the program to be incredibly intense, but overall I do feel pretty prepared. I think they do a good job with the time they have. They can be unorganized at times, but some of the professors we have had are just amazing and I feel lucky to have studied under them.
Good luck with everything. It is a tough year, but it will be worth it in the end.

Is it the clinical site assignments that are not organized? Do you get to pick preceptorship area (both location and area of interest)? Does the school address the current job market? This forum and other articles I've read have definitely left me discouraged as far the job market for new grads. Good luck with rest of program. You are almost there! :)
We had some input on our clinical area for preceptorship. Some people got what they wanted, others did not which is to be expected. I must say my preceptorship has been the best part of the program. I was very fortunate with my placement and have had a wonderful experience. 6 shifts left!! Also be prepared that many are working night shift in preceptorship.
As for books I sold almost all of mine back. The only thing I'm really keeping are the reference books (drugs, labs, etc) and pocket guides. There were definitely books on the list that I never really used. And others I I only opened to site for a paper. A lot depends on your learning style. Amazon has a great buy back program.

You really don't need a lab coat or sweater unless you want one. If you get cold easily then the sweater may be a good idea. I think the only time I wore my lab coat was when I was in L&D for two days and you had to wear something over the hospital scrubs to eat in the cafeteria, but the nurses had ones in the unit you could borrow. Either way, don't waste money on a patch for the sweater/lab coat if you do buy one. Also the patches are cheaper at NoVa uniforms.
