George Mason Accelerated BSN - Fall 2013 Applicants

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi all! New member here.

Since the only threads I see about GMU are from previous admissions cycles, I thought I'd start a new one for Fall 2013. The deadline just past... so who applied for this cycle?

April can't get here fast enough... let the waiting begin!

You will be at multiple different sites throughout the program. So far I have been in four different hospitals, although some people in our group were at Fairfax more than once.

So... I heard from another accepted student that this year's accelerated class will have their nursing school orientation (separate from the transfer orientation we have to attend) the week BEFORE classes start. Did anyone else hear about this??

sKris - you guys had yours during the first week, right?

Btw, I'm finally enrolled. :) Just waiting for transfer orientation dates in July since June doesn't fit into my schedule....

We had orientation Monday and Tuesday of the first week. The previous class had an orientation week before. Apparently it changes year to year.

Hi Ladies!

I've been interested in the program for quite some time. I applied in 2008 but was denied for the Fall 2009 session. They said my profile was not competitive enough. I have TWO master's degrees and an impressive resume (so I think!). But can yall give me an idea as to what they look for in an applicant? I am really interested in this program and KNOW that I was born to be a nurse!! Do they place more emphasis on the essay or the grades? I've heard that some ppl who earned a C in anatomy/physio were accepted.

I will be applying so I will be taking the science pre-reqs at NOVA.

Thanks ladies!!!

Has anyone set up their Mason e-mail account yet?? Just curious since the offer letter mentioned that we need to send it to the BSN department for communication over the Summer. If anyone has/knows how to do that yet please let me know! Thanks!

No, maybe it's something you do at the orientation? I did receive an email from the Dept on my regular email account yesterday just saying they received my intent letter to enroll in program and that to expect further communication mid-summer regarding immunizations, physical, registration for classes, and criminal background check. I was hoping we would get information on that sooner rather than later. Congratulations!

If you guys are still having issues setting up your Mason email account - and you live near the campus, or don't mind driving over - you can stop by the ITU Support Center in Innovation Hall for assistance. It only takes 10 minutes to set everything up (NetID, PatriotWeb, email), and the staff is super helpful. :)

I registered for the email account, etc. I think I saw that you can register for classes at orientation but remember reading on letter sent by Nursing Dept to drop classes until after July. So can we register during orientation? I can't wait to register for classes!

Did you guys receive the email from the nursing dept today? So we do have a week long orientation prior to classes starting. The email/letter says to go to myMason/Blackboard to get more info, but I don't see anything posted yet.

sKris-If I may ask yet few questions regarding the academic calendar since you have been so helpful. I'm thinking about logistics because I have kids. I was trying to find an academic calendar but I only see one for general GMU not nursing. You mentioned we have a 3 credit class during winter. Do we still have time off between Christmas and New Year's? Also classes are done in May but we then have community health (which runs from when to when--June to July?) and then preceptorship class goes from about what time to what time? I know I will find this info soon but I like to plan in advance. Thanks!

Another current GMU ABSN student here. I thought I could answer a few of your questions.

You will have time off between Christmas and New Year's. The 3 credit class starts in January and is done primarily online. We had to go to campus twice for that class.

Spring Semester is done in May, but then you have to do first and second summer sessions. Next week is the last week of the first summer session. We are taking a research methods class, capstone, and our community health clinical. We then have 1 week of Advanced Lab followed by Preceptorship in July. We are done on August 3rd, degrees confer on August 10th. For Preceptorship, we work our nurse's schedule, so 3 12's a week. Can be days, nights, weekends, etc. Whatever they work.

It is definitely a time consuming program, but worth it in the end. Good luck with everything.

Hi everyone! I am attending the ABSN program this fall. I went to the transfer orientation yesterday and can answer some questions.

We will have orientation for the entire week before classes begin, starting August 19. They are calling it blitz week and we'll learn how to take vital signs and things like that so we can hit the ground running when we start classes on August 26.

Fall semester our classes will all be at the Fairfax campus and we will be assigned one clinical site for the entire first semester. Spring semester our classes will be on their Manassas campus and will switch clinical sites every 5 weeks.

I registered for all the fall classes at orientation yesterday. The only things still TBA is which day I will have clinical and which days labs will be. All classes on MWF begin at 7:30am. Clinicals and labs will be on either Tuesday or Thursday, but they are still working out those details.

Hope this helps some folks! Looking forward to seeing you all in August!

Do we need white lab coats as part of the uniform? I thought I had read that somewhere before and now per website, it seems we only need the scrubs (green top, khaki pants) or am I missing something?

Per the website: "Sweater: Washable white cardigan, white lab coat or jacket with GMU patch"

So I guess a lab coat is acceptable?
