George Mason Accelerated BSN - Fall 2013 Applicants

Hi all! New member here.

Since the only threads I see about GMU are from previous admissions cycles, I thought I'd start a new one for Fall 2013. The deadline just past... so who applied for this cycle?

April can't get here fast enough... let the waiting begin!

There are 48 spots (although we have 47 people b/c one dropped out the first week). I don't know how many applicants there were, but it was a lot. Despite what they make you believe, not everyone admitted has a 4.0 in their prereqs.

Yes, the program is intense, but not impossible. There are a few people who work part-time, but I'm not sure how they manage. Good time management is key. I have kids, but luckily my husband is super supportive so that I can get enough study time. The spring semester just started and it's looking even busier than the fall. This semester we have clinical twice a week (T/R). Class M/W from 11:30-1:15 and two classes on Friday 10:30-4:15. Lab is either M or W at 7:30. Right now Lab is the ONLY thing on Fairfax campus. All our classes are in Manassas, which means that this semester we have to drive from one campus to the other on the same day.

I'm not going to lie, the program has it's problems. Organization is NOT their strong suit. Expect information to come last minute and then to change after that. It's frustrating but you just have to roll with it. There are good and bad professors and clinical instructors. Overall I'm still happy. I'm sure there would be problems no matter where you go and finishing in one year will be fantastic. I can't wait for August!

Here's a question: how many credits do students in the accelerated program carry each semester? I know it's a lot - since the program condenses 4 semesters (with a summer break) into 3 (no break). Are the 47 credits spread out evenly over the semesters, or is one semester packed while another one is relatively light?

In the fall I think we had 16 credits. We had a 3 credit 8-day course over winter break. Currently we have 16 credits and then I think we have 12 in the summer. Even though the fall and spring have the same number of credits, this semester is much harder. Clinicals two days a week really takes up a lot of study time and we have much more written work.

One more day until spring break!

sKris-The program does sound rather intense! Are there 2 clinicals in the summer-an inpatient setting and a community one?

I'm surprised more people have not responded to this thread. It might be that more people will come out closer to April. I can't believe there is still about 6 weeks before we find out!

Hello, there!

I also applied for GMU Accelerated BSN program a few month ago. I was wondering if there are applicants who would like to share their GPA, majors, etc.? I majored in psychology (B.A.) and got the degree at GMU. My overall GPA is quite poor (barely made 2.9) but I did my best on the essay part. I don't have much of clinical experience but I worked here and there (as a pre-school teacher and a counselor) and have volunteer experience in Habitat for Humanity. Since my graduation I started making youtube videos during my spare time.

April can't come any sooner! Waiting for the letter is brutal and painful... I hope we all get in!

I received my acceptance letter from GMU (general admission) in the mail! That's a couple weeks before I expected it so I am hoping that the letter from the nursing department will come before the end of April. :)

Yes, there are two summer clinicals. We have five weeks of community health along with two online courses. Then a one week intensive lab--all day 8:00 - 4:00. Then preceptorship! I can't believe it's only 7 weeks until summer. I am ready to be finished!

We have had people at VHC, Sibley, Mt Vernon, Children's, and Fairfax. Summer will be much more spread out.

Just got off the phone with the admissions office at GMU, and they said we should receive our transfer decisions (for the University, not nursing school) within the next 2 weeks. I was hoping it would be a little sooner, but at least the wait is almost over.

Supposedly next year classes are suppose to start at 7:30 and be back on Fairfax. Just a heads up.

REALLY?? OK... that just put another check mark in the "Pros" column for GMU. I can walk or bike to class! :)
