General Questions about CNM

Specialties CNM

Hi! I'm thinking about entering a nurse midwife graduate program and I have some questions. First, are CNMs allowed to work in any state or only the state they go to school in? I'm worried that I may have trouble finding a job or a job that pays well once I finish school. I don't mind moving to another state for a job but, I want to make sure I can move to other states and don't have to reapply for a license in every state. Second, how is the job market for CNMs and are there some places that have more jobs like hospitals or birth centers? What does starting salary look like? Since I'm going to have a lot of student loan debt I want to be able to find a high paying job quickly after I graduate. Any input you can give me would be awesome. Thanks!

You do have to get licensed in every state separately, just like in nursing.  It's just a matter of paperwork, you don't have to retake the boards in every state.  The job market is generally good, but it depends on your geographical area.  Where do you currently live?  Starting salaries differ, but range from around 80-100k in my experience.  I don't know what your definition of "high paying" is though.  Hope that is helpful.

CNMS are the only midwives that can work in every state and every setting (out of hospital and within hospital).  You have to get a separate license for your state and different states have different salaries depending on cost of living and job requirements.  Finding a job should not be too difficult if you are willing to relocate.
