Does anyone know what medications are usually ordered immediately post-op on a total abdominal hysterectomy? I know here, they will have a PCA with morphine, but I was wondering if there's anything else...

Estrogen replacement. Sometimes they'll apply a patch and send the patient home with a patch and the doc will later order HRT (hormone replacement therapy), usually something like Premarin.

While I'm thinking about it, UTIs are a bit more common since these patient have foleys in when they come out of surgery, so they might end up on an antibiotic. Technically, that would be a complication.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure if they put them on HRT right away...I haven't taken care of a pt that has had this before, but I have been in on the surgery with one, so I was wondering out the post-op care and meds.
