nutrition class:yes or no

Nursing Students General Students

Hello, everyone. I'm a pre-nursing student who is unsure about whether I should take a nutrition class this summer as preparation for nursing. The nursing program here doesn't require the nutrition class, but I've heard that some students say that it helps them with other subjects, such as Chemistry, but the class would be in 6 weeks, which seems like a short amount of time to me. I would like to take the class if it would help with my sciences or nursing classes, so I was wondering what any of you thought about the class: does it help with any other classes, or should I not worry about taking it at all? Thanks! :)

i just started nutrition this week so it will be interesting to see what we learn here. All of our programs ADN or BSN require it anyway.

Don't take anything you don't have to, unless you need the hours, or have time and money to spend.

:yeahthat: Tweety is exactly right!! I remember taking nutrition in college the first time... now I have to take it all over again for nursing school. (At my school the class is required, and for some reason, my units didn't transfer, but that's a whole different story!)

Anyway, yes, you can learn a lot in nutrition, but it is not necessary. The important stuff you can pick up along the way, so why spend a whole semester on it? If you are in a BSN program, you might be able to use the credits towards your degree. But if it's not necessary, why waste the time and money?

Save your brain cells for the hard stuff! :chuckle

I should explain that I wanted to take the nutrition class partly because I wanted to take a class that, according to my school, would help in nursing while waiting to get into A & P. The A & P class, despite the many sections, fills up within hours, so I haven't been able to get into it for the past 3 semesters. I still need A & P as a prereq, so if I don't get into A & P this summer or fall, I wanted to take a class that would help with nursing. (I also have to take Sociology.) Also, the college here said that many students take nutrition because it it can be used for a BSN degree. That's why I wanted feedback from people who can actually tell me whether nutrition class is worth it, even if it's not required for the associate degree.

I took nutrition online because I wanted to knock out some courses for bsn programs. I don't think that it will matter if you take it or not because they're going to teach you the material anyway.

Hi,

I took this class as a prereq class for several BSN programs that I applied to. Even if it isn't required for the program you are thinking of, it's a great class that will help you both in other classes and your personal life. It's nice to know random stuff like how the Atkins diet is detrimental for your health and how too much protein causes your body to leach calcium.

Take care,

Gail

Nutrition was required a a pre-req to get into the clinical sequence at my school.

If you think you'll go on to get a BSN later and you have the time now, take the class. :)
