I'm pretty sure I will be doing my first sub-Q today (insulin). Had my preconference yesterday and pt gets insulin before dinner. Clinical for me is 3-11. I'm so excited and nervous at the same time...
I've been refreshing on all the tips for the procedure...but any extra tips from you all would be appreciated.
I'll check in later and let you know how it went!
boy, I sure remember those days......
some tips for insulin - different spots are better than others depending on what type of insulin you are giving - I'm assuming that since it's mealtime coverage, it's either Regular or Novolog/Humalog - in that case, abdomen is the best - more evenly and rapidly absorbed - just remember to stay 2 inches away from the belly button, stay away from scars, go in at a 90 degree angle, (unless they are really thin, then you can do 45), don't aspirate (believe it or not, that used to be done)and don't massage when you are done - a quick wipe with the alcohol wipe will do! once you don't need the experience any more, it's good to have the patient do it on themself so you can check out their technique and offer any guidance (or praise).
good luck!!!!
