please don't get discouraged, we had some that failed their first check offs too. And they were so discouraged and wanted to quit, but they did just fine after that. Just remember this is not easy , but you will be able to do this, pick yourselfs up and try again. I need you to tell me the same thing, if I ever should tell you I want to quit.

Amy-- don't give up - I'm not going to let one little thing do me in and neither should you! You'll do wonderful on your lecture test tomorrow. Jaxia-- cheerleader skirt and pom-poms????? that's a side of you I'd never have imagined!! LOL. Fun - you and I had/have the same CI (if I recall correctly). She told us today that 3 failed the first checkoff last semester and still wound up with A's and turned out to be her best students. I wonder how many had medical backgrounds. I did miss something important, but she still counted off for things I did (Jaxia was my witness/patient). She does not care for me very much in general. Oh well, I can deal with her, whether or not she can deal with me :).

Well....I'll count that as a pat on the back for myself. lol (See, there's hope for everyone who doesn't pass the first time!)

Let's see...I was a medical assistant many moons ago....ha One person was a CNA, the other I'm not sure if she had any previous 'formal' training, but worked as a caresitter.

I know that we had an LVN that passed the first time, and a Scrub tech that passed as well. So, who knows...

Amy, you know I'm feeling terrible for you too now. However, I did the same thing! I wondered W.T.FUDGESICLES am I doing here????????? As I told you, I went to the truck & called my husband and cried. I went home, and went to bed early... in tears.

Went back the next day determined that it was NOT going to determine my future!

I hope you get to that point as well!

Good luck on the lecture exam!!! TRY NOT to change your answers unless you are ABSOLUTELY sure you were wrong the first time!!!

Thanks for your input Fun...it's just really frustrating, being in that position. I was really upset Monday, and by yesterday, I had my fire back. You had an LVN in your 1st semester? I wonder why she didn't do the bridge thing.

Amy--I'm sending good vibes your way...I know you can do it! I'm going to go read and start prepping for lecture Friday.

She said it has been 7 years since she worked in a hospital, and felt going through the whole program would help her feel comfortable with it again.

(She works in a Dr's office.)

We found that we had to VOICE EVERYTHING WE WERE DOING!!!! So, for future reference, voice the little things too....and make sure she knows you are doing it. :)

If she's busy writing something, she may miss something else....only human. Get on her good side, she is really a nice instructor. :)

(Voicing everything is I guess not an option in 2nd semester.....it specifically says to not say things like, "If I were in a hospital, I would........" oh great. :uhoh3:

Instead of speech, they should have made theater arts a required course. :uhoh3:

I saw from you guys to voice everything, and she counted me off for voicing to her that I was counting respirations now. My thought was how else would she know if I was still counting radial pulse or respirations? So now I'm not sure what I should or should not voice. Good for your classmate for being so committed to excellent care - most people would have taken the short way and figured they'd catch up. It's very commendable! Thanks for your input. It really helps...

Counting respirations shouldn't be told prior to counting d/t the pt changing their breathing pattern, either on purpose, or subconsciously.

It's a matter of how you do things, voice the fact that you did it by saying, "Pulse _____, respirations ____" If she didn't get it, then she should ask you to repeat it. If you say, "I'm going to take your pulse now", you can get the pt's wrist, and put it over the his/her chest.

She should automatically know that you plan on taking the pulse X 30 seconds, then respirations X 30 seconds. Of course, the AP is X 1 minute.

(If your timing is good, it's ok to count pulse & respirations the full minute as well.)

If you mess up, stop counting, wait until the full respiration is over, and start counting all over again. They may finish counting before you give a number, but it should still be within the range.

Have a talk with her. Ask how you should do that type of step in check-off.

Our instructor told us to verbalize when we were doing respirations but she mentioned that it was for check off purposes only and not to do it in real life. So I guess it just depends on the instructor.
