Chemistry Question - Is it necessary?

Nursing Students General Students

I would like to find out from nursing students if they feel that chemistry is a necessary pre-req to do well in nursing school or on the TEAVs?

My school of choice does not require it as a pre-req, but they do require students to take biochemistry within the nursing program.

I was planning to take chemistry for understanding chemistry questions on the TEAVs since I have no chemistry experience other than what I have learned in cellular biology.

Do you use chemistry very much in nursing school? Is it needed to do well on the TEAVs, or could I do some basic home study and khanacademy.org for chemistry?

If I don't have to take it I can apply for nursing school in the spring of 2014, otherwise I have to wait until fall 2014.

I had teas questions that were chemistry and it's come up quite a bit in the respiratory system in a&p

I think Chemistry is important. Not only does it help with dimensional analysis; but also, I think it is helpful in understanding fluid and electrolyte imbalances. Just my opinion though.

Chemistry class is where I learned dimensional analysis..talk about saving my hind parts in nursing school with dosage calculation and understanding metric conversations, titrations!

Why is this even a question? TEAS is just a placement exam that does really nothing (IMO). You can read, great. You can do simple math, awesome, you know basic science, fantabulous. You pass the grammar section, accomplishment. But that's it.

Is chemistry relevant? HECK yes it is. In my opinion general chemistry is not enough. I've taken 2 semesters of general chemistry, 2 semesters of organic chemistry, and 2 semesters of biochemistry. Understanding the broad scale of how things work in the human body you should have a decent if not good understanding of all 3 chemistry courses, they are all related hence the relevancy. Understanding how medications work in the body you need to have at least a good foundation of organic chemistry.

So the program you're applying to doesn't require general chemistry or organic chemistry, but want it's students to jump the gun and take biochem? *****!? That makes noooooooo sense to me....
