checkoff nightmare

So we had our ostomy checkoff today. I feel so horrible because I failed it. We did it in groups of three so I was the first one to go I was so nervous first we had to transfer the mannequin to the chair oh by the way we were also being checked off on that. So I get started I'm teaching the client and I'm doing everything right but toward the end I realized that I didn't have gloves on I immediately I didn't even try to put them on because I was finished but I did tell her. My problem is that we never had a chance to practice I was so nervous I guess because I was first to go. Also I don't think its fair because another member forgot to apply skin prep and nothing was said, plus our instructor was cuing them the whole way she would say stuff like are you finished are you sure anything else you want to do. I know she could of cued me just abit being that it was my first time doing it but then again I realize that gloves are probably the most important thing to do. And now the whole entire class knows that I failed and I feel horrible. She said that I did everything fine but gloves are very important. just wanted to vent. Has anyone ever felt this way like how could I forget something that minor and cause me to fail.:crying2:

Well, unfortunately, forgetting gloves isn't really "minor", at all.

While, I'm sure, in real life, there would have been no way you would have forgotten to put on gloves (especially since we're talking ostomy care) the fact is, that in check off you just can't miss the stuff that jeopardizes safety.

Like when we did our trach returns. We had people who did everything ok... but broke sterility. They failed.

But then we had people who maybe stumbled over what to do next, but didn't break sterility. They passed.

Don't be beat yourself up over it.

You'll probably never make that mistake again.

You were the first to go... you had everyone watching.

And I do know the feeling.

My partner and I failed our first return.

You just dust yourself off and get back to it, because if that was the only thing wrong you did the first time (and knowing you won't do it again) then that can only mean you will pass the second time.

Don't beat yourself up.

Sorry that happened to you. It is hard to remember to put on gloves when you are working with a clean plastic mannequin on top of being nervous already. It's one of those things you obviously wouldn't forget if you were working on a real ostomy!
