Hi All,
I am confuse about what kind of course/degree/diploma someone has to do from India who wish to become a Registered Nurse in US later on? My friend is about to start GNM(Diploma in general nursing and midwifery) from her place in India. I suggested her to do BSc in Nursing. She told me that In her town they don't offer BSc to people who don't have science background.
Is GNM will be equivalent to BSC in Nursing? If not so what she has to do next? She says that University people says that she will be a registered nurse or staff nurse in india once she completed this diploma. Buy my concern is that is this diploma will be valid in US? Pls help me with this. She is about to start the course soon.
Thanks.

It is hard to say whether it will be accepted in the US as training needs to have both theory and clinical in Paeds, Mental health, general Adult as well as obstetrics. So a lot will depend on what her transcripts state once she has completed her training.
Thanks Silverdragon102.
Can some one tell me what someone exactly need to do from India if she wants to become a Registered Nurse in US? I know that later she has to take License exam and all but initially what kind of degree/diploma she needs?

Tell her to contact the state board of nursing that she wishes to obtain licensure in. Also be aware what is accepted in one state might not be accepted to another. Let your friend know that if she wishes to practice as a nurse she's going to be waiting a very long time as retrogression is set and there are people who already have a nursing degree and have been waiting for years at the chance to come work as a nurse in the US. Let her know that looking at other places should be an option too.

Plus I hope she is doing this course because she wants to be a nurse, and not because she wants to go to the States eventually. Nursing is great, when you want to work worldwide, but first you should like your job and get practice in your own country.
