Nurses General Nursing

I m from India, a developing country.. it is a country of love and traditions .people find helping each other as a general responsibility,,, yet nursing (the most noble profession in my view) has not received its required status here.... People still think that the care takers in various hospitals are untrained,,, uneducated people who are just paid a small amount to do some work ......... although the criteria is changing for the younger group of people but the older people still own the same thoughts....... They really think that nurse don't need to study a lot the just have to go for some regular assisting programme and are paid for it......

I m Tarundeep Kaur, RN, India........ This incident is about of the time when I was a student and was on my morning shift in the female medical ward.that was my first day in the ward and the patient assigned to me was an old lady in her late sixties (Satnam kaur) ... She was not feeling fit to do her morning care herself so I was supposed to provide her all the basic care.. I assisted her for her morning care giving her a bed bath, mouth care and made her bed tidy..... She was very pleased and blessed me... but later in the afternoon when I was assisting her to have her lunch.... She offered me a ten rupee note and said me " na je kuch padh likh lendi tan edan davakhanian ch safai da kam ta nai karna painda ( this is in her language)" (which means that if you had studied and got some education than you would not had to work as a sweeper helping people to care for themselves in these hospitals......) and when I refused to take the money she said me that it will help me in my living and if I m interested she can offer me a job to work at her home ,,, if I will accept the job ,I will not have to work in hospitals helping people to earn my living ... she said I look like a good girl and she is pleased with my work .....

I was stunned.. Then I made her understand that I m not an illiterate and I m a graduate.. and RN and that I really belong to a well to do family.. And nursing is not a job done by illiterate people and it enjoys a great standard in today's world and the girls opting for nursing profession are very well educated and most of them are even the top rankers in their universities and our education is never less than a doctor..... and what is the true meaning of nursing....she did well responded to this new set of information and was happy for me that I m not illiterate.......I hope like I was able to make her understand someday every individual in India will know the true meaning of being a "NURSE"

This is not just a case with me.. Many of my friends had gone through similar incidents many-a -times...

Still whenever I remember that day ,,,it brings a smile on my face......
