Nurses General Nursing

Hi,

I'm new here. I am not in nursing school yet, but I want to become a nurse, and will start taking pre-reqs next semester. The thing is needles kind of make me nervous. Also, the thought of giving someone an IV makes me nervous:imbar Do you think after I actually start working with needles and IV's my nervousness will go away? Sorry, this might sound really stupid. I'm just worried that people will think I'm not cut out for nursing if I'm not totally comfortable with using needles at first. What do you all think?????

I can identify... i am in my final year of nursing school.. you should have seen our group when we started...we were shaking like leaves when were about to give our first SC injection...now we come flying at people like ninja nurses with darts...you get over it and it comes with practice..i am not even done school yet and i am totally fine with the needle thing... you'll be just fine.."stab" away...

Also wanted to add, If you are allowed to stick in nursing school, your instructor will be present and will have identified an appropriate patient, one that is not scared to the bejesus to begin with.

It's very important to have a patient that is not freakish to begin with, also, don't forget to have the patient deep breathe. When patients are nervous and hold their breaths, that fight/flight adreneline response takes hold and the body responds by clamping down the periphery, which makes veins "disappear". so If you have a needle in place where you KNOW there was a vein, you relax, then help the patient relax while deep breathing, hold the needle still for a few moments, then try to find it.

you can do it!!!
