Hi -

I am a nursing student looking into a summer job as a patient care tech. This being the only summer I will have without classes I want to have a flexible schedule. Can anyone explain how registry works? I believe you have to work at least 8 hours a month , but what else?

Thanks

It depends on the hospital and unit all have different requirements. You would have to ask you potential employer. In my hospital there are different levels of pay each with a different amount of committment hours per month weekends and some include holidays

Registry would be a fabulous option for you! Through a private registry you are not required to work any quota of hours, you work when, if and where you want, 8, 10, 12 hours for any shift at all. I work for 2 different registries and have been working 2 eight hour shifts per week right now because I have other things going on that require me to be available.

The pay is much better than if you work in house registry at a certain facility. If that is your consideration however(in house as opposed to out house) then yes, you are contracted to give them so many hours during a pay period, but you still call the shots on when those hours will be. You also are less likely, if in house, to be cancelled if census is low. Keep in touch and let us know what you decide and how it's going.
