What can I do?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello. I wrote a few weeks ago about working a job on a cardiac med-surg. unit and hating it. I work 12-hour day shifts and the job was just killing me - I have multiple sclerosis. I talked to management but I don't think they were too interested in working with me regarding shift changes. The bottom line was their main concern - people are quitting like crazy on that unit. So I quit during my orientation period so they wouldn't loose an actual staff member. I have no symptoms by the way but I would have had I stayed much longer.

I worked for all of 2.5 months and I'm back in the job market again. I have always been very interested in psych nursing so I'm thinking of pursuing that. I don't believe that psych nursing is easy at all - just different and not med-surg. This is a second career for me - I have a bachelor's in journalism - so I don't want to waste time doing something I don't want to do.

Are there any psych nurses out there who can offer any advice? There are several psych facilities in my area that are hiring, I'm just so scared to apply. I will definitely have to explain why I quit my first job so quickly.

Does anyone do medical writing? I have a degree in journalism after all. I don't want to give up on nursing yet. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I also quit my first job after 3 months (the ICU). I hated it. It wasn't what I thought it would be and I felt very overwhelmed. I found another job before I quit though. As for a new job I'd simply explain to them that the position you left didn't work for you and you felt you should leave when you did. I wouldn't get into any personal health problems with them. Good luck. There are plenty of nursing jobs out there. You're sure to find one you fit into.
