Volunteering Locally

I'm sorry if this is in an inappropriate part of the forum, but I couldn't quite figure out where to post this. My search showed a lot of questions from students asking about volunteering in hospitals or people asking to work abroad, but there didn't seem to be specific questions like mine.

Has anyone volunteered their time locally? I remember in high school, there would be volunteer medical crew at marching band competitions, for examples. I would like to do something like that on weekends, now that I work in a M-F environment. I don't want to go to Africa for six months or quit my job to work in an impoverished area so I can get student loan assistance. I've looked at the red cross, and their volunteering seems focused on disaster times, but I'm already committed through my hospital to report during disasters.

Does anyone volunteer for schools, fun runs/5ks, or anything else? Or does anyone know how to go about doing this?
